Lady Like is the debut studio album recorded by American country music singer-songwriter Ingrid Andress. It was released on March 27, 2020 via Warner Records Nashville. The deluxe edition was released on October 2, 2020.[1] The album earned Andress three nominations at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, including Best Country Album, Best New Artist, and Best Country Song for “More Hearts Than Mine”, the album’s lead single.

Content[]

Andress confirmed the album's track listing on March 5, 2020. She co-wrote and co-produced the entire album.[2] The deluxe edition features a cover of "Boys", which Andress wrote and which was originally recorded by Charli XCX; a "reimagined" version of "The Stranger"; a new version of "More Hearts Than Mine" featuring Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman of Little Big Town; previously-released track "Waste of Lime"; plus one new track ("Feeling Things").[3]

Singles[]

"More Hearts Than Mine"[4] was released as the album's lead single and impacted country radio in July of 2019. The song was a critical and commercial success, peaking at number thirty on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also a top 5 hit on the Billboard Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs charts.[5][6] The song was certified Platinum by the RIAA on June 18, 2020 for selling over 1,000,000 units in the US.

"The Stranger" was released on June 8, 2020 as the album's second single.[7] After a few months, it was swiftly pulled from radio to make way for the album's third single, the title track, "Lady Like" which impacted U.S. country radio on October 5, 2020, along with a new lyric video released to YouTube. Both singles reached the top 50 on the Billboard Country Airplay. [8]

Critical reception[]

Marlo Ashley of Exclaim! rated the album 7 out of 10, stating that the album "sonically diverges from the country-pop norm; Andress's lyrical honesty adds a sentimental perspective that invites you to listen to something out of the ordinary and makes you crave more."[9] Cillea Houghton of Taste of Country wrote that Andress is "intelligent in her writing, clever with her words and has a brazen personality to match," and that she "brings a refreshing voice to country music."[2] Justin Cober-Lake of Pop Matters also rated the album 7 out of 10, writing that the album succeeds "through a combination of songwriting craft and distinctive sound," and adding that "part of that distinctness comes from Andress' clear lyrical voice [which] consistently expresses a single vision."[10]

Awards and Nominations[]

"Lady Like" received a nomination for Best Country Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards, becoming Andress' first nomination in the category.
