Landis is a town in Rowan County, North Carolina, in the United States. At the 2020 census, its population was 3,109. The town is located just north of Kannapolis and south of China Grove.

History[]

Landis was incorporated in 1901 and began as a textile town, with its largest mill being Linn Mill Company.[7]

At the 2020 census, there were 3,109 people in 1,267 households, 846 of which were families.[10] The population density was about 887.6 per square mile.[3] The racial makeup of the town was about 68% white, 26% Black/African American, 4% Asian, 3.2% Hispanic/Latino, 0.05% American Indian/Alaskan Native, and 0.04% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander.[11]

Of the 1,267 households, 397 contained children under the age of 18; 657 were husband-wife married couples; 139 had a female householder with no husband present; and 421 were non-family homes. 352 households were individuals living alone and 189 households had non-nuclear family present.[10] The average household size was 3.2 and the average family size was 3.8.[3][12]

32% of the population were under the age of 18; 3.5% from 18 to 24; 27.7% from 25 to 44; 21.7% from 45 to 64; and 15% 65 years of age or older.[3][11] The median age was 35.7 years.[3] There were 1,509 males and 1,600 females.[10]

The median household income was $69,000 and the median individual income was $26,000; the median household income for the state of North Carolina was $55,000 and the individual income was $29,000.[13][14] Males in Landis had a median income of $45,000 while females had a median income of $17,000.[14] The per capita income was $24,481 and the poverty rate was about 5%.[3][14] 9% of children under the age of 18 and 5% of seniors over the age of 65 were under the poverty line.[14]

Education[]

Children in Landis are zoned for Landis Elementary School, Corriher-Lipe Middle School, and South Rowan High School (China Grove.[15] Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is 3.7 miles south of Landis in the nearby town of Kannapolis and is the closet institution of higher education, followed by Shaw University's CAPE Center, North Carolina Research Campus, Ambassador Christian College, and Livingstone College.[16]
