The Landmark Inn is a historic hotel in Marquette, Michigan, which opened in 1930 as the Hotel Northland.

Background[]

Work on the Hotel Northland began in 1917, when the concrete foundation was poured. Construction of the building itself did not begin until twelve years later, on April 1, 1929, after George Shiras III and the stockholders in the Kambawgam Hotel Co.,[2] had raised the $350,000 necessary to build the hotel.[3] The Northland opened on January 1, 1930. It hosted the cast and crew of the film Anatomy of a Murder, including James Stewart and Lee Remick, during filming in 1959. In the early 1970s, the hotel was renamed the Heritage House, and then in 1978 the Old Marquette Inn. The hotel began to decline due to lack of maintenance and closed in 1982.[3]

The abandoned hotel was purchased by Christine and Bruce Pesola in 1995 for $100,000.[3] They completely restored the hotel and reopened it in 1997 as The Landmark Inn.[4] The hotel has been owned by Graves Hospitality Management based in Minneapolis since 2015.[5]

For a number of years, The Landmark Inn was a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.[6]
