Legoland New York Resort is a theme park in Goshen, New York, themed after the Lego toy brand. Consisting 150 acres (61 ha) of seven themed lands on a property of 500 acres (200 ha). The park contains numerous structures made of Lego or designed to resemble Lego. Though the park is targeted toward kids 2 to 12 years old as well as Lego enthusiasts, anyone with a ticket can enter the park.[5]

The park initially cost $500 million and took five years to construct.[6] Opening on May 20, 2021,[7] for people who purchased exclusive "1st to play" passes,[8] while on May 29, 2021 for the general public,[9] becoming the first new outdoor theme park addition to the northeast in decades.[10] It is owned by Merlin Entertainments[11] and is the ninth Legoland park worldwide. In the United States, it is the third park following Legoland California (1999), and Legoland Florida (2011).[12]

History[]

Proposals for a third Legoland location in the United States began in October 2015, when Merlin Entertainments proposed to construct a resort in Haverstraw, Rockland County. That would include a theme park, water park, Sea Life aquarium, and hotel.[13] But plans were immediately withdrawn due to immense resident concerns. At least 200 Rockland County residents worried about traffic, pollution, noise, property, and use on public services.[14]

On May 26, 2016, Legoland New York was reconsidered in the town of Goshen, New York, because of the additional land available in the area, as well as the proximity to the New York metropolitan area.[15][16] This Legoland will still have a theme park and Sea Life but will exclude the water park.[17][18]

On October 19, 2017, the Town of Goshen approved plans for the park and six days later on October 25, 2017, Merlin Entertainments officially announced Legoland New York, a 500-acre theme park with a 250-room Legoland hotel.[19][20] Construction started soon afterward.

Shortly after, on October 25, 2017, the New York Empire State Development supported the project by setting aside $10 million to support the expected vehicle traffic. This included the reconstruction of exit 125 on Route 17[21] as well as widening roads.[22] This will all bring Route 17 closer to a National Interstate Designation on Interstate 86 (Pennsylvania–New York).[23][24]

In late 2019, it was announced that the resort was to open to the general public on July 4, 2020, to coincide with Independence Day.[25]

On March 31, 2020, due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York of 2020, construction on the project was halted, and a new opening time period of early 2021 was announced.[26][27][28]

During time periods in December 2020 and January 2021, pass holders who purchased their passes in 2019 were given exclusive access inside the first two lands, Brick Street and Bricktopia. Guests were able to look around the two lands and purchase food and merchandise, but no rides were open.[29]

On February 19, 2021, the New York State Government announced family attractions will reopen, confirming a Legoland opening of 2021.[30]

On April 9, 2021, New York family attractions reopened for the first time since the pandemic. Legoland was clear to open and its safety plan has been accepted by the New York State Government.[31]

On May 19, 2021, Legoland New York announced its official plan to open the park in phases due to construction delays, as well as opening reservations and ticket purchases for pass holders and the public.[32][33]

On May 20, 2021, Legoland New York opened for "1st to play" pass holders who paid additional in 2019 for special access to a event before official park opening.[34] Lego City and Lego Pirates were completely off limits during this time.[35]

Following that week, on May 29, 2021, Legoland New York officially opened to the general public and other pass holders.[36] This was a soft opening, since Lego Pirates and part of Lego City was still under construction and the park needed time to learn about COVID precautions and how elements in the park would work.[37] In conjunction, ticket prices were reduced to half[38] of the planned ticket prices.[39] The Legoland Hotel was also delayed, with all of these opening later in the summer.[40][41]

Finally, on July 9, 2021[42] after 4 years of construction, Legoland New York fully opened[43] with all seven lands and corresponding rides open.[44][45] Ticket prices returned to normal and the park began to operate daily.[46][47] But the Legoland hotel did not open and was announced that stays can start August 6, concluding the initial park construction period.[48][49]

Every Wednesday from August 4, 2021 until the park stopped operating on Wednesdays (September 1), held the park's first seasonal event. Minifigure Mayhem. Visiting guests receive a coupon for a free build your own minifigure at the entrance. The event also encourages visitors to trade Lego minifigures with staff and ride the Lego Factory Adventure Ride, giving guests discounts for photos.[50] Meet and greets with Lego minifigures were also part of the event, but these were random rather than following the usual schedule.[51][52]

On August 6, 2021, the Legoland Hotel opened with a grand opening and started accepting overnight stays,[53] giving guests the opportunity to have a place near the park to stay when visiting.[54] This also enables multi day experiences to the park,[55] classifying it as a resort by marking the completion of initial resort construction.[56]

Park Layout[]

The park features seven themed areas (or "lands") that each serve different purposes to the park. In addition to a fully themed Legoland Hotel built for kids and families and a yet to be constructed Sea Life. Most lands and rides are found at most existing Legoland parks around the world. The lands are separated by a hill and each land connects to each other in a circle.[57] Most lands are based on Lego toy themes, part of the largest Legoland ever built in the world.[58] There are 15,000 real Lego models of different sizes made up of a total of 30 million Lego bricks.[59] The park itself covers 150 acres (61 ha) on a land of 500 acres (200 ha) that gives the ability for further expansion.[60][61]

The main sections replicate the East Coast, Goshen, Las Vegas, Middle America, Midtown, New York City, The Bronx, and the West Coast.[105] This Miniland pays increased tribute to New York State, with increased elements to New York City and its landmarks.[106][107] Some of the models are interactive to guests, using buttons, levers, etc.[108]

Sea Life[]

Many Legoland parks include Sea Life aquariums, and while not yet constructed, Legoland New York plans to have one too.[109] Currently, this is only planned for future construction, as construction did not yet begin. While it is confirmed,[110] there is no projected dates for opening or construction.[111]

Legoland Hotel[]

This is a 250 room resort hotel that has four different kinds of rooms themed along with Lego Themes.[112] There is also a heated pool and restaurant on site, with a walkway connecting the hotel to the main entrance of the park.[113] New technology advancements also include self check-in kiosks and Google Nest speakers in every room.[114][115] Kids are given numerous activities and the hotel contains many interactive spots along with Lego models.[116][117] The hotel is open year round, unlike the theme park which is open seasonally.[118]

Criticism[]

From the original location, Legoland New York caused opposition from locals, and in Goshen and the surrounding areas, these oppositions continue.

The main issue was the increased attention to the originally small town, as well as effects from increased vehicle traffic. In addition to the increased demand on the water supply system, raising taxes.[119]

Residents also had environmental concerns, as runoff during construction has already increased chances of polluting the ecosystem.[120] The Department Of Environmental Conservation already issued fines of $346,000 during construction for this effect. Locals continue to worry of future pollution when the park receives many visitors.[121]
