Leona Pettas (レオナ・ペタス) (born April 29, 1992) is a Japanese kickboxer. He took the family name of his first trainer Karateka Nicholas Pettas. He is the former Krush Super Featherweight champion.

As of September 2020, he is the #2 ranked Bantamweight according to Combat Press.[1] Combat Press ranked him the #4 Flyweight in May and June 2019,[2][3] and #3 Flyweight between July 2019[4] and August 2020.[5]

Kickboxing career[]

Krush debut[]

Pettas made his professional debut against Shota, during Krush-EX 2012 vol.3. He won the fight by a first round KO.[6] He was then scheduled to fight Yoshikazu Isobe,[7] a fight which he won by TKO, 22 second into the second round.[8]

He suffered his first professional loss in January 2013, when he dropped a decision to Katsuya Goto.[9]

Pettas rebounded from this loss by winning his next three fights. He knocked out Hitoshi Aketo,[10] and won unanimous decisions against Junpei Aotsu[11] and Takeshi Watanabe.[12]

Leona's three fight winning streak was snapped by Kotaro Shimano during Krush.39, who stopped Pettas by TKO in the first round.[13]

Pettas won four of his next six fights. He won decisions against Tomohiro Kitai,[14] Keisuke Nakamura[15] and Masahiro Yamamoto,[16] as well as knocking out Toshi with a head kick.[17] He drew against Fumiya Osawa,[18] and lost a unanimous decision against Haruaki Otsuki.[19]

Hero Legends tournament[]

Pettas made his K-1 debut in November 2015 against Taiga Kawabe. He won the fight by majority decision.[20] In his next fight, Pettas rematch Toshi, but lost the rematch by unanimous decision.[21]

Leona Pettas participated in the 2016 Hero Legends 60 kg tournament. He defeated Jiou Piao by decision in the first round, She Yuhan by TKO in the quarterfinals, Feng Tianhao by KO in the semifinals, and won the tournament with a decision win over Li Qiyu.[22][23]

Return to Krush[]

Returning to Krush, Pettas won his next three fights against Yuta Takahashi, Hayato and Taio Asahisa by unanimous decision.[24][25][26]

His winning streak earned Pettas a chance to fight Riku Anpo for the vacant Krush Super Featherweight title. Anpo won the fight by unanimous decision.[27]

In his next fight, Pettas defeated Yoshiki Harada by a second round KO.[28] He then fought Yuma Saikyo during Krush 87,[29] and won by unanimous decision.[30] Leona was scheduled to fight Zhao Chongyang during Krush 90, and beat Chongyang by a second round KO.[31] Pettas afterwards fought a rematch with Taio Asahisa,[32] and once again won a unanimous decision.[33] Extending his winning streak to five, Pettas knocked Kosuke Komiyama out with a left jab in the second round.[34]

Krush title reign[]

His five fight winning streak gave Pettas another chance to fight for the Krush Super Featherweight title, against Yuma Saikyo. Pettas won the fight by majority decision.[35]

Pettas defended his title for the first time against Naoki Yamamoto during Krush 109. He won the fight by a second round TKO.[36]

After beating Yuta Murakoshi by TKO during K'Festa 3,[37] Pettas defended his Krush title for the second time against Tatsuya Oiwa. Pettas won the fight by unanimous decision.[38]

Leona Pettas was scheduled to fight Takeru Segawa for the K-1 Super Featherweight title,[39] but the fight was postponed as Takeru broke his hand in training.[40] The fight with Takeru was rescheduled for K-1: K'Festa 4.[41] The event was later rescheduled for March 28, 2021.[42] Pettas lost the fight by a second-round knockout, snapping his nine-fight winning streak.[43]

On September 3, 2021, Pettas officially vacated his Krush super featherweight title.[44]

Move up in weight[]

Pettas was scheduled to face Maki Chatchai, in a 61.5 kg catchweight bout, at K-1 World GP 2021 in Osaka on December 4, 2021.[45] Pettas won the fight by unanimous decision.[46]
