"Liar" is a song by American singer Camila Cabello. It was released the same day as "Shameless", on September 5, 2019, as one of the double lead singles from Cabello's second studio album Romance (2019). The song was written by Cabello, Ali Tamposi, Andrew Watt, Jon Bellion, Jordan Johnson and Stefan Johnson. Songwriting credits were also given to Lionel Richie and Ace of Base members Jenny Berggren, Jonas Berggren, Malin Berggren and Ulf Ekberg due to interpolations of "All Night Long (All Night)" and "All That She Wants". It was produced by Watt, the Monsters and the Strangerz and Bellion.

"Liar" peaked at number 52 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and charted in the top 10 in Lithuania and the Netherlands (Dutch Top 40). It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[2]

Background[]

On September 1, 2019, Cabello took to social media to upload a teaser of her second project called Romance.[3][4] The first installment was announced to premiere on September 5, 2019. Cabello uploaded several pictures of the cover art being revealed and presented in a museum-type of room in the days after.[5][6] The official cover art of the song was unveiled September 4, 2019.[7]

Composition[]

"Liar" contains elements of flamenco and Latin trap, and a ska-pop chorus.[8] It was written by Camila Cabello, Alexandra Tamposi, Andrew Wotman, Jonathan Bellion, Jordan Johnson, Stefan Johnson, Jenny Berggren, Jonas Berggren, Malin Berggren, Ulf Ekberg and Lionel Richie, and produced by Wotman, The Monsters and the Strangerz and Bellion. "Liar" runs for three minutes and twenty-seven seconds.[9]

In terms of music notation, "Liar" was composed using 4
4
common time
in the key of B minor. According to the sheet music published at Musicnotes.com by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Cabello's vocal range spans from the low note F#3 to the high note of F#5, giving the song a two octave vocal range.[10]

Critical reception[]

Jon Pareles of The New York Times wrote in his review, "'Liar' is a canny pan-Caribbean and Spanish mélange. As she sings about how a certain kiss makes her lose control despite herself – 'Clothes are on the floor,' she notes at the end – the ultra-canny track segues from mariachi horns to the stark electronics of Latin trap to flamenco handclaps to a ska-pop chorus: border-hopping at the speed of pop."[8] After listing the song 20th of "the 54 Best Songs of 2019," Pareles also pointed out that the song is "a lighthearted plaint about the power of lust," and it "riffles quickly through style after style — salsa, reggaetón, flamenco, ska, ballad — working nimbly and globally to hold elusive the pop attention span."[11]

Live performances[]

Cabello performed the song live at the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Festival,[12] and at a private fan concert hosted by Verizon.[13] She also performed the song on The Graham Norton Show on October 25, 2019.[citation needed]

Music video[]

Background[]

Cabello shared a preview of the music video through social media on September 11, 2019, with the comment, "literally most fun video I've ever made."[14] It was directed by Dave Meyers, and was released on September 12, 2019.[15] The music video is considered to be a "mini movie" by Patrick Hosken of MTV News, with Cabello portraying a fictionalized version of herself, and Euphoria actor Zak Steiner portraying her engaged fiancé and billionaire oil tycoon, Reese Kensington. Keiynan Lonsdale, Nataliz Jimenez, and Chelsea Brea also appear in supporting roles.[14]

Synopsis[]

Cabello is strapped to a polygraph while wearing a white straitjacket on the viewer's right. To the viewer's left is a person confronting her with their palms facing up.
The video's time loop sequence was compared to the film Groundhog Day[16] and streaming TV series Russian Doll, while the overall music video was compared to the film Inception.[14]

Cabello appears miserable while eating at an outdoor restaurant with her fiancé, Reese Kensington, who only sees her as his trophy wife.[15] She exclaims, "I hate this restaurant... and I want a cheeseburger!" before exiting the restaurant, which triggers the revival of previously wilted flowers and a sudden realization from the waiters, while also causing Cabello to become trampled under an elephant.[14] The latter is placed in a time loop, where she wakes up and repeats the same scene with Kensington after dying in various accidents which progressively become more surreal; these include choking to death, being run over by a horde of French bicyclists, being swarmed by drones, and inadvertently burning down Kensington's mansion.[15][16]

Cabello is then taken away by the Truth Police to be placed on a polygraph, while wearing a straitjacket.[14] She finally professes her love to the waiter at the restaurant, and dances with backup dancers in straitjackets before eventually dancing with the former. Cabello awakes the next day in a different house and holds a digitally animated bird, seemingly breaking out of the time loop. An adjacent television in the room broadcasts a sensationalist news show played earlier in the music video. The three fictionalized hosts (Cabello portrays the lead host wearing a red wig) start conversing about her recent break-up and mock her dating choices, as Cabello reaches for the remote to switch the television off.[citation needed]

Reception[]

Writing for Rolling Stone, Althea Legaspi summarized the plot as "Cabello reliving a number of scenes that get progressively more ridiculous and humorous as she tries to escape her conflicting emotions", and noted that the music video "mirror[ed] the song's lyrics about falling for someone, despite being in continual denial about those feelings".[16] Liz Calvario of Entertainment Tonight commented that it was "telenovela-inspired", and described it as "fascinating".[15] Hosken stated that the "extravagant" music video was similar to the 2019 comedy-drama streaming television series Russian Doll than the 1993 fantasy comedy film Groundhog Day, contrasting Bill Murray's "aimless hedonism" in the former to Natasha Lyonne's "sense of purpose" in the latter. He added that the music video's plot was "secondary to the overall experience", which he compared to the "mindfuckery" of the 2010 science fiction action film Inception. Hosken praised the cinematic scope, which he singled out "the pink shot of Cabello amid a sea of flamingos" as "downright dazzling", and acknowledged that she enjoyed portraying an increasingly unhinged person.[14]
