During British rule, Liberation Day celebration took place in Hong Kong on the last Monday in August to commemorate the liberation of Hong Kong from Japanese occupation on August 30, 1945.[1] No official ceremonies have taken place in Hong Kong since 1997. Nevertheless, unofficial delegations do mark events at The Cenotaph, and the flag poles are occasionally dressed.
On September 9, 1998, the "Holidays (Amendment) Bill 1998" was passed to include the abolition of the public holiday for the Victory Day in the War of Resistance against Japan. public holiday known as the "Hong Kong Liberation Day" before July 1, 1997)[2][3]
Memorial Day of the War of Resistance[4] was created after 1997 but in fact referred to the Second Sino-Japanese War.
