List of NCAA Division I men's soccer programs
This is a list of men's college soccer programs in the United States, that play in NCAA Division I. As of the most recent 2021 NCAA Division I men's soccer season, 208 schools in the United States sponsored Division I varsity men's soccer; 202 of these schools were full Division I members, five (Bellarmine, Dixie State, California Baptist, Merrimack, and UC San Diego) were in transition from NCAA Division II to Division I, and one (St. Thomas) is transitioning from Division III. Several schools (among them UC San Diego) chose not to play men's soccer in that season due to COVID-19 concerns.
This list reflects each team's conference affiliation as of the upcoming season in 2022.[1]
Several schools changed conferences during the 2022 offseason, with all changes officially taking effect on July 1, 2022:
- Lindenwood and Southern Indiana chose as their reclassification destination the Ohio Valley Conference, which has only women's soccer. Their men's soccer teams' affiliations have yet to be announced.[2][3]
- Monmouth and Stony Brook became CAA men's soccer members. They came from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and America East respectively.[4]
- The Missouri Valley Conference gained two members and lost one. Belmont moved men's soccer from the Southern Conference and University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) from the Horizon League.[5][6] Loyola Chicago joined the Atlantic 10 Conference.[7]
- The Sun Belt Conference would have taken in two new men's soccer teams and one returning team by 2023: Marshall and Old Dominion from Conference USA (C-USA), and James Madison from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).[8][9][10] After James Madison announced its intent to join the Sun Belt in November 2021, the CAA invoked its bylaws and declared the Dukes ineligible to compete for the conference's remaining championships in the 2021–22 season.[11] The Sun Belt eventually admitted James Madison to the conference earlier by a year,[12] and two of the three outgoing C-USA universities later planned to also join the Sun Belt at the same time as James Madison.[13] However, the Sun Belt will reinstate the sport in the 2023 season, leaving James Madison, Marshall, and Old Dominion as likely independents for that sport in 2022.[14]
- The Western Athletic Conference also gained one member and lost another. Chicago State, which played the 2021 season in its full-time home of the WAC for men's soccer,[15] announced its departure from the conference at the end of the 2021–22 school year.[16] Incarnate Word became a full WAC member.[17]
- West Virginia also moved men's soccer from the Mid-American Conference to Conference USA.[18]
