The original cast members of Running Man are Yoo Jae-suk, Gary, Haha, Ji Suk-jin, Kim Jong-kook, Lee Kwang-soo and Song Joong-ki.[1] Song Ji-hyo was originally a guest for the second (episode 2–3) and third landmark (episode 4–5). She officially joined the program in the fourth landmark (episode 6) but was unable to attend until the fifth landmark (episode 7).[2] In April 2011, Song Joong-ki recorded his last episode (episode 41) in May, and has left the program to focus on his acting career but returned on episode 66 as a guest after leaving for almost half a year, and later made cameo appearances in several episodes.[3] After School's Lizzy was initially a guest for episode 13 and 14, and would later join in episode 18 as official member. However, she left show from episode 26 due to schedule conflicts with her group activities. She later returned as a guest in episode 292, 5 years since her last appearance.[4][5] On October 25, 2016, Gary announced his departure from the show to focus on his music career after being with Running Man for 6 years, but later returned as a guest, a week after his final recording.[6] On April 3, 2017, it was confirmed through various media outlets that Running Man is adding actress Jeon So-min and comedian Yang Se-chan.[7] On April 27, 2021, Lee Kwang-soo announced his departure, becoming the third original cast member to leave the show.[8]

Episode 1 – present The main host of the show, who is known for his escaping abilities and quick thinking during race missions. As a main host, he has been featured as a protagonist in many special episodes, which presented him with a nickname of Yoo-mes Bond. He is shown to have a close relationship with a lot of the guests on the show, which he often boasts about to the other members. He is also often referenced to the color green throughout the show and is also known for his nickname "Grasshopper" from his first television appearances. He becomes one of the most capable players in the series, and is, along with Kim Jong-kook, considered to be one of the two main powers in missions. He is also one of the smartest and is one of the Ace Trio. His theme songs are "Step by Step" by New Kids on the Block and "Extreme Ways" by Moby. His official colour is green. Episode 1 – present The primary joker of the cast and is usually picked on by other members because of his height and his similar appearance to Pororo the Little Penguin. In the earliest episodes of the program, Haha had a tendency to feel as though he is the main lead in a movie created by his imagination, as well as be the playboy of the cast, as he always confesses his love to female guests. When things don't go his way, he lashes out verbally, causing great laughter among the cast. However, this ended when he became engaged to singer Byul, changing to a "married man" and becoming very rough to female guests. He was one of the weakest player during the missions, occasionally being picked on even while on the chasing team especially Jaesuk and Jihyo from the mission team. He is one of the betrayers, cheaters and tiger moths of the show. His theme songs are "Perfect Love" by Lutricia McNeal and the theme song of Pororo the Little Penguin. His official colour is yellow. His animal is a Penguin.

Episode 1 – present The oldest member of the show and one of Yoo Jae-suk's closest friends, having known each other for more than 20 years. He is shown to be jealous of the good relationship between Yoo Jae-suk and Kim Jong-kook. Dubbed the "Race Starter" during the race missions, he is shown to be one of the weakest members and is the most frequently eliminated, so easily that the other members would declare that the race has officially started after his elimination. He's even dubbed as the group's "black hole" because of this. He is also the most gullible among the cast, as he gets easily tricked, particularly towards business investments, though he is also sometimes portrayed to be smart, particularly towards Korean history. His theme song is "House You Live In" by Park Jin-young. His official colour is orange. His animal is an Impala.

Episode 1 – present The strongest and bravest member of the cast, Kim Jong-kook is known for his strength and skill during the race missions. During the missions, he is known for his sudden appearances that are often accompanied by the soundbite "This is Sparta!" taken from the movie 300. His smart tactics are often successful to eliminate the other members and as a result, he is known for having both brains and brawn. He is also one of the smartest and is one of the Ace Trio. He is also shown at times to show off his aegyo. His only apparent weakness is women and he is often teased for having a particular fondness towards Yoon Eun-hye. He treats Haha, Lee Kwang-soo and later Yang Se-chan as his subordinates and lackeys. His theme songs are "What We Need Is A Hero" by Alan Silvestri, his own song, "One Man" and "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio. His official colour is red. His animal is a Tiger.

The luckiest member of the show, who initially only appeared as a guest, but was added to the main cast in episode 6. Song Ji-hyo was often known to swear and became bad during broadcasts towards Kwang-soo. She is often seen with confused or blank facial expressions most of the time. Throughout the series, she has been involved in the official loveline of the show alongside Gary. She is one of the strongest players during the missions with similar running, catching capabilities and intelligence comparable to Yoo Jae-suk and Kim Jong-kook, though lacking in quiz missions except to 5 second quiz or common knowledge quiz. She is also known as the female version of Yoo Jae-suk and Kim Jong-kook which is noticed by Lee Kwang-soo on ep 177. She is also one of the smartest and is one of the Ace Trio. As the show occasionally hands out gold as the prize for winning the final mission, she is known to have always won it. Her theme song is the Angry Birds theme song and "Dam-da-di" by Lee Tzsche. One of the youngest members of the show, who initially appeared as a guest for a couple of episodes. She was officially added to the main cast since episode 346. She has a capability to hold steel objects on her body like a magnet. She is known as the female version of Lee Kwang-soo and Haha because of her betraying other members, cheating and becoming a tiger moth which is the same with Lee Kwang-soo and Haha. So Min is considered the new player of the cast after taking on the role from Kwang Soo, often getting flustered around handsome male guests, though the other members frequently tease her by pairing her with Se-chan or Jong-kook. She becomes scary when money gets involved. Her theme song is "Careless Whisper", by George Michael and "Tunak Tunak Tun", by Daler Mehndi. Her official colour is pink. One of the youngest members of the show, who initially appeared as a guest for a couple of episodes. He was officially added to the main cast since episode 346. Since becoming a member, he quickly becomes a member of the unlucky group along with Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin and Lee Kwang-soo. He is also referred as the #8, in terms of appearance. He replace Kwang-soo's role as Jong-kook's principal lackey, and become his favourite person, accidentally making Kwang-soo fury and became abandoned, however in later episodes he and Kwang-soo become best friends by its age and because are Jong-kook's "servants". Formerly known as the youngest member of the show (at 19 years old), Lizzy is known for her cute looks and her "aegyo". Lizzy has left Running Man since episode 28. Her reason for leaving was never mentioned in the show, but possibly due to scheduling conflicts between the show and After School activities. The visual member of the show, who was introduced alongside Gary and Lee Kwang-soo as one of the "variety rookies" due to his lack of experience on variety shows prior to Running Man. He was known for his intelligence, enthusiasm and optimism, often trying out new things and attempting to figure out puzzles and strategize during the race missions; but often result in ultimate failure. In episode 41, he left the cast to focus on his acting career, to which the departure occurred on the same year of 2011 when Lizzy left.[3] However, he reappeared in episode 66 as a guest. He was initially set to return as a guest in episode 283 for the 2016 Smile Cup, but later appeared in that episode as a special appearance only due to his injury to his knee, preventing him from taking part in the missions. The most gullible and honest member of the show, who was introduced alongside Lee Kwang-soo and Song Joong-ki as one of the "variety rookies" due to his lack of experience on variety shows prior to Running Man. Throughout the series, he has been involved in the official loveline of the show alongside Song Ji-hyo, as well as an love rival of Haha. Although shown to be quite clueless at times, he is known as "The man full of surprises" and the "dark horse" of Running Man during race missions sometimes, highlighted when the show held the Best of the Best Match with him winning the match twice in a row. He is also known to be easily irritated whenever the members, particularly Haha, called him a "squid" (as the byword for being ugly), which often leaves him depressed. His theme songs are his various Leessang songs. He left the cast as of episode 324 to focus on his music career, but briefly returned in the following episode 325 as a guest.[6] His official colour is blue. His animal is a Monkey.

Episode 1 – 559 The tallest member of the cast, initially introduced alongside Gary and Song Joong-ki as one of the "variety rookies" due to his lack of experience on variety shows prior to Running Man. During the earlier episodes, he was known for framing his fellow members with embarrassing and often absurd rumors. He is often picked on by the rest of the cast, particularly Kim Jong-kook and Yoo Jae-suk, due to his timid nature. He entertains the viewers as the King of betrayers, cheaters and tiger moths in the show. He is also known to be one of the most unluckiest and most penalized member, having earned the worst results in nearly every luck-based missions. It was revealed that he is one of the most popular members and earned a great reputation in various regions of Asia through the series, which left the others in shock. He gained the nickname "Prince of Asia" from this. After 11 years of being a regular cast member of the show, he left the cast in episode 559 due to a lingering ankle injury caused by a car accident the year prior. His theme songs are "Saint Agnes and the Burning Train" by Sting, the main theme of Public Enemy, Kidding from and "Theme of False Emperor" from Sangokushi Taisen. His official colour is black. The "Ace" and "Sparta" relation was first depicted in Episode 21. They then became one of the strongest teams. In Episode 379, they proved their love for extreme sports and rode New Zealand's scary Nevis Swing upside down facing the landscape; the most dangerous and extreme way to experience the ride. They are one of the most compatible pairs in the show. When these two team up, they are invincible together and always win.

These two are always in a bitter siblings rivalry because they are often seen bickering and fighting with each other. In Episode 42, Song Ji-hyo gave Yoo Jae-suk a candy to make an alliance with him. In the end, Song Ji-hyo betrayed Yoo Jae-suk by ripping off his name tag. Their great chemistry was noticed very early even before the show starts on Family Outing. They have earned the nickname ''national siblings" due to their chemistry and funny bickering. They are one of the most compatible pairs in the show. When these two team up, they are invisible together and always win. In fact, she's one of the three women who can and dare to be savage to Jae-suk (along with Hyori and Jessi). The two show a Tom and Jerry-esque relationship. Although they always bicker and fight, they always take care of each other, like real siblings.

Since it was the first time the strongest and weakest member were together, the atmosphere after the elimination was awkward. Yoo Jae-suk was the first to pinpoint the series' latest combination.

The two MCs have been close friends for more than 20 years and that they both have "Suk" in their names. However, Ji Suk-jin is always jealous of the good relationship Jae-suk has with Kim Jong-kook. These two are often on the same team and they have an endearing older brother/little brother relationship throughout the show and often address each other as such in a playful manner. The two have been close friends since prior to X-man. The two have performed and toured together as the Running Man Brothers.

Ha-Suk (하석) This "loveline" was formed after the announcement that Song Ji-hyo was dating the CEO of her company in Episode 82. Ji Suk-jin commented that a new loveline was needed in the show. Following which, Haha commented that he was preparing for a love line and Yoo Jae-suk immediately jokingly replied, saying that he couldn't sleep because he has been thinking about Haha too much. They often argue with each other with the superpowers given on Episode 74. "The one who controls time" and "The one who drives me crazy" are the top two phrases said by Yoo Jae-suk and Haha.

They are sometimes being teased together.

In Episode 372, when Lee Kwang-soo is choosing members to join Kim Jong-kook's team for a game, Ji Suk-jin suggests he add the "clumsy ones" to the team. Lee Kwang-soo adds him to the team and ends up adding Jeon So-min to the team as well deeming them both as "clumsy." This encourages other members to call them "Team Clumsy" and Yoo Jae-suk makes up a new nickname for them which is "Clumsy Jeon and Awkward Ji." When Jeon So-min first entered the show, she used to take care of Yoo Jae-suk and Ji Suk-jin because they were old like their daughter/niece In the episode 542 make a similar cheer of "Feel! Touch! Cross!" (that Suk-jin makes with Lee Kwang Soo) called "Slow! Clumsy! Cross!"

In earlier episodes, Haha and Song Ji-hyo used to be involved in a love triangle with Gary. However Haha got married in 2012 and the love triangle between the three ended. The duo is one of the most compatible pairing in the show. Nowadays, Ji-hyo tends to pick Haha in couple races, resulting in them teaming up a lot. They are known to be living in the same neighbourhood, hence the relation "Mapo-gu Siblings."

The relationship of these three is that of friends with bad luck, notably failed the mission when being together as a team. It started when they failed the mission in Osaka (Episode 347 & 348), and in Mongolia (Episode 351-353) with Jihyo. They also notable for condemning to the hell of ramen which bringing them to mission failure, starting in Episode 390 in Okinawa, and in the End Year's Special (Episode 429-431). They are also recognized for their bad luck and persistence. Besides that, So min always complained being team up with these two as she said they are old and are very needy. Their team looks like 2 fathers and a daughter/uncles and a niece.

The relationship seemed one-sided until episode 16 when Ji-hyo told the cast that on Mondays she has a man, referring to Gary. Haha was in a love triangle with them in some of the earlier episodes. Later, the show was filmed on both Mondays and Tuesdays, leading to jokes about the couple not being in effect on Tuesdays.

At the beginning of Running Man history, there existed a love triangle between the Monday Couple and Haha. It has been shown in earlier episodes, like episodes 20 and 43 for example how Haha and Gary competed over Song Ji Hyo. During Song Ji-hyo's week (episode 333), Haha even jokingly apologized for marrying his wife Byul and said that he could have won her love.

Chasing Team (추격 팀)

A twist on the name of the former Korean band Seo Taiji and Boys (서태지와 아이들). In the earlier episodes, Gary and Haha were often found in the same team, and were usually under the control of the domineering Kim Jong-kook. Thus, they were often shown as being afraid of Kim Jong-kook. Lizzy later joined the team at episode 20 to form "Kim Jong-kook and the Three Kids". These three were almost always chosen to be the chasing team. After the format changed, they often teamed up with guest, too. They were also often seen standing together during the opening.

Same-Aged Friends (동갑내기)[17] Lee Kwang-soo claims to be close friends with Song Joong-ki as they are of the same age (both born in 1985), but Song Joong-ki would often deny their close friendship, leaving Kwang-soo appearing depressed. Song Joong-ki finally admitted to their close friendship in his final speech during the filming of his last episode (Episode 41).

The rivalry between Gary and Haha had existed since way back and it got worse when they fought over Ji-hyo as they were involved in a love triangle but was just recently confirmed in episode 275 where they'd have been bickering a lot more than usual in the past few episodes. Ironically, they were often in the same team and have won in many occasions.

The New Dumb and Dumber relation was first depicted in Episode 65 when they became a duo, acting similarly to the Dumb and Dumber couple of Family Outing. Later, they were known as the Easy Brothers when they were designated spies for Episode 68, and a clue was offered to the other members that threatened to reveal their identities. The clue was "Easy", a combination of their surnames 이(Lee, pronounced ee) and 지(Ji). Whenever they pair up, they are also known for performing their "Feel, Touch, Cross!" (필, 촉, 크로스!) chant before each mission.[19]

In Episode 99, the duo were given a spy mission to oust their kings respectively but they failed the mission. They are known as members with impressive cheating and betraying skills to the extent of betraying each other. They are also known as 'Tiger Moth' along with So-min because they are attracted to money just like how moths attracted to flames, even worse than other moths.

The duo was formed when Yoo Jae-suk and Lee Kwang-soo paired up in Episode 90 by combining both their surnames together, 유(Yoo) and 이(Lee, pronounced ee). Throughout Episode 90, Yoo Jae-suk and Lee Kwang-soo often does the "Yoo-Lee" cross. Often at which, Lee Kwang-soo would state that it sounds like the name of After School's Uee, and would lead to the members claiming that they miss her. They finally met and teamed up team with Uee in episode 137, doing the "Yoo-Lee" cross. The name also pertains to IU, a popular Korean singer.

In earlier episodes, this trio was often eliminated the earliest during Bells Hide and Seek, and met each other at the jail. They are also known as Lee-Yoo-Ji, an evolved form of Easy Brothers. It was created when Ji Suk-jin was getting jealous of Lee Kwang-soo being close with Yoo Jae-suk, and calling themselves Lee-Yoo in Episode 81. Asking whether Lee Kwang-soo was with Easy or the new Lee-Yoo, Yoo Jae-suk replies "that is the reason" ("the reason" is "Lee-Yoo-Ji" in Korean), and Ji Suk-jin reluctantly joins them to become Lee-Yoo-Ji, in which their surnames being put together.

Tiger and Giraffe (호랑이와 기린)[21]

Their relation was formed in Episode 82 when Lee Kwang-soo and Kim Jong-kook were paired in a team. Since Kim Jong-kook resembles a tiger and Lee Kwang-soo resembles a giraffe, their relationship is known as Tiger and Giraffe. This happened again in Episode 84 where Lee Kwang-soo and Kim Jong-kook were chosen by the opposing team to pair up together with paper handcuffs, leaving both of them stuck to each other for the rest of the episode. The two show a Tom and Jerry-esque relationship.[22] In later episodes, Jong-kook see Kwang-soo as his most loyal lackey.

Betrayers Club (배신자 클럽)[23] After Haha and Lee Kwang-soo became betrayal masters, Ji Suk-jin was added and they became the Betrayal Team. They were known for their constant betrayals in missions. They could even betray each other, thus distrust always exist in the team. In Episode 146, there was an episode featuring them, where they were listed as the Betrayers Club who attempts to steal a treasure.

Mong-Kwang Siblings (멍광 남매) These two are often seen fighting with each other. The two show a Tom and Jerry-esque relationship. Although they often fight, they take care of each other just like close siblings similar to Yoo Jae-suk and Song Ji-hyo's relationship. Song Ji-hyo had been asked which member she is most comfortable and close with in Running Man and she mentioned Lee Kwang-soo.

Ever since her first appearance in the program, Jeon So-min has been showing same characters as Lee Kwang-soo. Kim Jong-kook and His Three Lackeys (김종국과 삼 개의 협박) This group was formed after Yoo Jae-suk created it, due to the fact that the mentioned members were in one team. Kim Jong-kook was the leader and the three other members had to serve Jong-kook so that he wouldn't pick one of the three lackeys to go to the dangerous attraction. The four members also often to have a special connection, which the other members of the show couldn't understand.

Before Yang Se-chan joined the show, Yoo Jae-suk, Ji Suk-jin, Haha and Lee Kwang-soo were known as the unlucky members. Yang Se-chan is deemed unlucky and has joined the unlucky trio replacing Haha to form a group called "Unlucky Ones." They are also given the nickname "the ugly tribe" in Episode 346 when it was concluded that when the world comes to an end, the four males would be together. In episode 425, Yoo Jae-suk ironically called themselves F4, a reference to Boys Over Flowers where F4 was a group of 4 handsome flower boys. The F in their case could stand for the grade F instead of Flower.

The Six Fools

The team was formed in Ep 501 when they had The 1st Running Man Quiz Strongest Person War. Ji Suk-jin called out Yang Se-chan, Haha, and with Yoo Jae-suk's help, Lee Kwang-soo, as the stupid trio because of their usual lacking performance during quiz segments. Haha, on the other hand, pointed Song Ji-hyo as their real captain. Despite Ji-hyo's quick wit and strength, which earned her the name 'Running Man's Ace', she is usually slow during quizzes.
