In cricket, a batsman reaches a century when he scores 100 or more runs in a single innings. A century is regarded as a landmark score for a batsman, and his number of centuries is generally recorded in his career statistics.[1][2] For a player to score a century (100 runs or more) in their hundredth One Day International (ODI) match is considered a notable achievement.[3][4][5] As of 2021, 266 cricketers have played in at least 100 ODIs,[6] while among them, only 9 batsmen have achieved the milestone of hitting a century in their hundredth ODI.[7]

The first player to score a century in his hundredth ODI match was West Indian Gordon Greenidge, who smashed an unbeaten 102 runs off 154 balls against Pakistan, on 18 October 1988, during the 1988–89 Champions Trophy.[8] Scoring the century, Greenidge also holds the record for being the only cricketer, who scored a century in both 100th Test and One Day International appearance.[9] On 19 January 1999, Chris Cairns slammed 115 runs off just 80 balls in his 100th ODI match against India, which was also the fastest century in terms of strike rate by a batsman in hundredth ODI.[10][11] The youngest player to achieve this milestone was Chris Gayle, who scored an unbeaten century against England, on 6 July 2004, at the age of 24, while his score of 132 is also the highest individual score in one's 100th ODI.[12][13] Indian prolific batsman Shikhar Dhawan is the most recent player to hit a century in hundredth ODI match, doing so on 10 February 2018, against South Africa.[14]

The West Indies is the only team to have had more than one different player scoring a century in their hundredth ODI match. The West Indies have had three different players to achieve this feat, the most of any country. While the West Indies, Sri Lanka and India are the only losing teams to have experienced a player scoring century in hundredth ODI.[15][16]

The year 2004 has seen two players accomplishing the notable feat of scoring a century in their hundredth ODI, the most than any other year so far. While the Sharjah Cricket Stadium has witnessed the most number of players reaching this landmark than any other ground, when Gordon Greenidge and Mohammad Yousuf scored century in their 100th ODI in 1988 and 2002 respectively.[17]
