Scandinavian Nights is a double live-album by the British hard rock band Deep Purple. It was recorded in the Stockholm Konserthuset on 12 November 1970.
Background[]
This concert was originally recorded at the Stockholm Concert Hall |Konserthuset] on 12 November 1970, by Sveriges Radio, (Swedish National Radio), (SR).
They first broadcast part of it, on a live concert radio show called "Midnight Hour", (broadcast on 14 November 1970).
("Tonkraft" is the wrong title, that series didn´t start until autumn 1972).
It was 4 tracks : "Into The Fire", "Child In Time", "Paint It Black" (edited), and "Mandrake Root" (faded after 22 ½ min.), that was transmitted in the original broadcast.
In 1982 SR broadcast the rest of the 3 (4) tracks : "Speed King", "Into The Fire" (repeated in a different mix), "Wring That Neck", and "Black Night".
They were transmitted in a live concert program series called "Rock Från Underjorden", ("Rock From The Underworld / Underground").
You can read more about the two different broadcasts, on "Svensk Media Databas" (SMDB), on their site.

smdb.kb.se/catalog/search?q=deep+purple+rock+fr%C3%A5n+underjorden&sort=OLDEST ("Rock Från Underjorden")
The two different SR broadcasts, (the first one in mono, and the second one in stereo), were then assembled on an 2 LP vinyl bootleg called "Alive Tribute To Wally" in the mid 80´s.
But not released officially until 1988, under the title of "Scandinavian Nights" in Europe. The tapes were re-mixed by Tom Leader at Angel Recording Studios in London. It remains the prime example of the early Mk II set list. The set list comprises songs from the album Deep Purple in Rock and long instrumentals from earlier albums. The two songs "Mandrake Root" and "Wring that Neck", are 30 min. long each!!!. And took up half the concert in the early days, until the Fireball tour when the lineup was able to add more original material. The European vinyl release contained a limited edition picture booklet. The track timings printed (on both European vinyl and CD) refer to the length of the actual songs, in-between pauses are not included, but the timings on the US CDs do include the pauses.
The US double CD, released in 1992, was titled "Live and Rare".
The original master tapes were later discovered and remixed for a re-release as "Live in Stockholm" by Purple Records in 2005, with improved sound quality. This release ist the most complete version of the concert. MC Introduction and all the interludes between the different songs are complete. On all the other released versions, MC Introduction and several interludes are missing or are edited shorter. This release also has the best sound quality. On the original release the song running order was adjusted to fit the timing-restrictions of vinyl, and the first CD edition unnecessarily mimicked this; "Live in Stockholm" features the set list in the correct order.
A new edition of the album, titled "Stockholm 1970", was released in 2014 by EDEL as part of "The Official Deep Purple (Overseas) Live Series" with additional material: two songs recorded for "Pop Deux" / "Pop 2", in Paris in 1970, ("Wring That Neck" and "Mandrake Root") (both edited); contemporary Jon Lord interview; a bonus DVD with Deep Purple's performance, "Doing Their Thing", at Granada TV in 1970, previously released on VHS. Including the tracks "Speed King", "Child In Time, "Wring That Neck" and "Mandrake Root", (all, except "Child In Time", are edited) .
This really is a stellar performance, with much jamming, especially from Ritchie and Jon.
Correct set list order is :
1 "Speed King", 11 mins.,
2 "Into The Fire", 5 mins.
3 "Child In Time", 18 mins., (with a long organ solo, besides the guitar solo).
4 "Wring That Neck", 31 mins.
5 "Paint It Black", 13 mins., (with drum solo).
6 "Mandrake Root", 30 mins.
7 "Black Night", 7 mins.
Totally an 120 mins. long concert in pristine soundquality. It can´t get much better.
