Luke Browning (born 31 January 2002) is a British racing driver, currently competing in the GB3 Championship for Fortec Motorsports and the ADAC Formula 4 Championship. He was the champion of the 2020 F4 British Championship.
Career[]
Junior Saloon Car Championship[]
In 2016 Browning made his debut in car racing, competing in the Junior Saloon Car Championship in the UK. He won a race and was awarded the title "Henry Surtees Teen Racer of the Year 2016", having finished ninth in his first year in motorsport competition.[1]
Ginetta Junior Championship[]
For 2017, the Brit made a switch to the Ginetta Junior Championship with Richardson Racing. Browning's season highlight would end up being a pole position he scored in the second Silverstone race, and he placed eleventh in the standings.[2] In the following season Browning stayed on with Richardson Racing. His season started out strongly, with three victories after four races. However, over the course of the season Browning was outscored by rookie Louis Foster and eventual champion Adam Smalley, and finished in third position, with a total of eight victories, as well as ten further podium finishes.[3]
Formula 4[]
Browning progressed to the F4 British Championship in 2019, once again remaining with Richardson Racing.[4] The Brit achieved his first single-seater win in the opening race of the season at Brands Hatch, having started the race from a lowly tenth place, and added to that tally with a victory at the Thruxton Circuit, in a race where him and fellow lead contender Zane Maloney collided on the final lap.[5][6] His season ended with four podiums from the final four races, and Browning ended up sixth in the championship. In 2020, Browning moved to Fortec Motorsport for his second season of British F4, partnering Rafael Villagómez and Roberto Faria for parts of the season.[7] The season was memorable for the tight batte for the title between Browning and Carlin's Zak O'Sullivan.[8] The pair exchanged victories at almost every weekend, with the round at Thruxton being the exception in race wins by either of the two. Browning ended up winning the championship by three points to his younger rival at the final race of the season, even though the latter had scored nine victories compared to Browning's seven throughout the campaign.[9][10]
GB3 Championship[]
On 9 September 2021 Browning announced that he would be making his debut in the GB3 Championship at Oulton Park.[11] Driving for his title-winning outfit from the previous year, Browning experienced an eventful weekend: having finished his first race in the category in second place, only behind the dominant Zak O'Sullivan, Browning was disqualified for not having his car's skid block within the minimum dimensional requirement at the front left measurement position after the race.[12] Browning would then end up winning the second race, amid much confusion at the waving of the checkered flag. After having come together with O'Sullivan prior, Browning and his teammate Faria tangled on the twelfth lap whilst locked in a battle for the lead. The Brazilian span into the barrier, but Browning was able to re-join the track when the red flag was thrown. It was initially believed that Bart Horsten had won the race, as the rulebook states that a car has to be running during a red flag to be classified. When the stewards noticed that Browning had still been running at the time the race was abandoned, they counted back to lap 10, as per the regulations, and awarded Browning the victory.[13] He had a spin in race 3, and retired in the pits shortly after.[14]
