Mabel Moir James

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mabel Moir-James (1917–2010) was the first woman political minister in Dominica.[1] Moir-James was also active in women's rights movements and founded the Women's Guild in Dominica.[2]

Biography[]

Before entering politics, Moir-James worked with her husband in a drug-store business.[1]

She became a part of the Dominica Labour Party and won a seat for the Western District in the 1966 general election. She was made the Minister of Communications and Works, the first woman to be a government minister of Dominica (as Phylis Shand Allfrey was a minister of the Federation of the West Indies).[1]

In 1967, Dominica received Associated statehood from Britain, and Moir-James became the Minister of Home Affairs.[1] She served in that position from 1967 to 1970.[3]
