Suryaputra Mahavir Karna (transl. Son of Sun Karna, The Warrior) is an upcoming Indian Tamil epic historical drama film written and directed by R. S. Vimal. The film is based on the character Karna from the Indian epic Mahabharata. Initially it was intended that the film would be made in Tamil and Hindi only,[5][6] but subsequently RS Vimal announced that it would be made in Telugu and Malayalam too.[7][8]

Production[]

Development[]

On 15 January 2016, a mythological film titled Karnan was announced by R. S. Vimal, along with actor Prithviraj Sukumaran (who was cast in the title role) and debutant producer Venu Kunnappilly, at a function held at Burj Al Arab, Dubai. The film was based on Karna, a mythological character in the Indian epic Mahabharata. The official launch of Kunnappilly's production company Kavya Films was held at the function and a motion poster featuring Prithviraj was released. It was announced that the film would be a bilingual made in Malayalam and Tamil languages with dubbed versions in other Indian languages and it would be the most-expensive Malayalam film made until then. K. K. Senthil Kumar was announced as the cinematographer. The film was on the process of scripting at the time, written by Vimal himself, who was making his second directorial after Prithviraj-starring Ennu Ninte Moideen.[9][10] However, the project was shelved when Kunnappilly backed out, citing that the budget exceeded 60 crore and the final estimated budget was much higher than he could fund. Vimal revealed the updated budget to be 300 crore.[11]

Mahavir Karna was announced in January 2018 by Vimal and Vikram who was cast in the title role, produced by New York-based company United Film Kingdom, on a budget of 300 crore.[12] Vimal originally wrote the script in English and Malayalam. The script's Tamil translation was done by B. Jeyamohan, while Suresh Nair translated it into Hindi.[13] According to Vimal, the film is made in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam languages, with dubbed versions in other languages.

Filming[]

Principal photography began on 8 February 2019.[14][15] The film later restarted promotions with the name of the film titled Suryaputra Mahavir Karna and Vikram opting out of the film since he is doing another historical film, Ponniyin Selvan.[16][17]
