Mallinson Girls School is located in Srinagar (Sheikh Bagh) in Kashmir Valley.[1] The school was founded by Ms Fitze Mallinson in 1912 at Fateh Kadal and later shifted to Lal Chowk in Srinagar.

History[]

Mallinson Girls' School was founded in 1912 by Miss Violet B. Fitze as the Girls' Mission High School. Its name was later changed to Mallinson Girls' School in honour of Miss Mallinson, a missionary who served in the school from 1922 to 1961.[2] The Mallinson Girls Srinagar was established at Fateh Kadal in 1912. It was in October 1912, when Miss Violet B. Fitze laid the foundation of the CMS Girls' School in a mud house in FatehKadal. In the beginning, Miss Fitze had to face opposition from various quarters but, by 1918, the school was raised to the middle standard and it received a grant of Rs. 700/- from the Education Department of the State. Miss Violet B. Fitze died in 1929.[citation needed]

With the  arrival of Miss Mallinson in October 1922, the new age of women's education really dawned.[original research?] The school underwent a transformation during the period when Miss Mallinson was the principal (1922–61).[citation needed] Under her leadership, the school became a hub of cultural activities.[original research?] Miss Mallinson introduced Drill, Camping, Mountaineering, Cycling, Arts and Crafts, Home Science and many other activities which became compulsory in the years to come for the rest of the state and even for the women of the country.[citation needed] What she introduced in the first quarter of the twentieth century was introduced in the country in late fifties, after Independence. The subjects taught in the school were English, Urdu, Persian, General Knowledge, Mathematics and Nature Study (Environmental Studies). Hindi was introduced in 1944 and General Science in 1946–47. So far this subject had not been provided for in any other girls School. Apart from these subjects, Basket Making, Embroidery, Laundry, Cooking etc. also received attention.[citation needed] The year 1942 saw the shifting of the Biscoe Boys' School to a large piece of land at Sheikh-Bagh, donated by Mr.Hadow, a carpet merchant, to the CMS. The Girls' School also followed suit in 1965 since the space was available at the Sheikh-Bagh Campus to accommodate the newly named Miss Muriel P. Mallinson Girls' School.

The Administration of the schools in the valley was handed over to the Church in India by the C.M.S. London, in 1953, with its Administrative Office being the Diocese of Amritsar. Ms. Muriel P. Mallinson retired in the year 1962 and later visited the schools as a visitor twice. She was present for the last time in Tyndale-Biscoe in 1970. She died in June, 1980. The next C.M.S. Missionary to take over was Mr. John Mead Ray who held the charge of the Mallinson School as its Manager till his departure from Kashmir in 1986. During his tenure, the schools were strengthened in outdoor activities and the House System.[citation needed] He added a number of buildings during his tenure to accommodate more students in the Biscoe Boys’ School as well as the Mallinson Girls' School on the Sheikh-Bagh Campus. He specially raised the standards of activities like Mountaineering, Skiing, Regattas, Trekking and Climbing in the mountains that surround the valley of Kashmir.[citation needed] Miss Prem Sudhamani Gergan (Premi) joined as a Senior teacher in the Mallinson School in 1962. She became its Headmistress in 1969 and later took over as Principal in 1986. She left the school in 1993.[citation needed]

Alistair R A Freese is currently[when?] the Principal of the institution while its former principal Parvez Samuel Kaul now holds the office of the Head of the School.[citation needed]

The first woman matriculate of Kashmir, Begum Zaffar Ali began her career as a teacher in the Girls' Mission High School in 1925. Mehmooda Ali Shah, educationist and Padma Shri awardee, was an alumnus of the institution.[3][4]

Controversy[]

Rajan Sandhu, former Estates Supervisor of Tyndale-Biscoe and Mallinson society, along with member of St.Paul's Church, Amritsar, Isaac Samuel, approached the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Srinagar to claim that chairman of joint management committee, Bishop of diocese of Amritsar, Pradeep Kumar Samantaroy, Principal and Director, Tyndale Biscoe and Mallinson School, Parvez Samuel Koul, Headmistress of Mallinson School and The Kashmir Valley school, Joyce Kaul, Administrator Tyndale Biscoe and Mallinson school, Rahul rex Kaul, Chief Accounts officer of Tyndale Biscoe and Mallinson School, and Accounts and estates officer, Vijendara Dhanvantri were in league with each other in resorting to illegal and corrupt practices which was bringing harm to the school and that they “withdrew unaudited crores of rupees by way of labeling the sums as basic salary, cost of living, honorarium, travel allowance, medical expenses overtime etc”. Further, they claimed that the assets of the society have been converted into personal assets.“The illegal conversion of society assets into personal assets needs a thorough investigation. As in case of Tyndale Biscoe and Mallinson school Tangmarg, spread across an area of 19 Kanals of land, 12 kanals have been purchased in the name of Parvez Koul and seven Kanals in the name of Joyce Kaul, using the money of the society as reflected in the book accounts,” the litigation states.[5][6]
