María Luisa "Malu" Trevejo (/trɛˈvɛˌh/, born October 15, 2002) is a Cuban-born American singer based in Miami, Florida who performs in both Spanish and English. She became famous for her videos on the video sharing app Musical.ly.[2] She's now also an Instagram personality with more than 10 million followers.[3] On September 22, 2017, she released her debut single, "Luna Llena" through Universal Music Latin. It has acquired over 100 million views on her YouTube channel as of November 2019. Not long after, she released another single "En Mi Mente" which has surpassed 10 million views.[4]

Early life and career beginnings[]

María Luisa Trevejo was born in Havana, Cuba and then moved to Madrid, Spain with her parents when she was still a baby and lived there for 12 years.[5] During her time in Spain, Trevejo showed a lot of interest in acting especially with skits videos she did with her friends, recorded by her parents.[6] She also has always been belly dancing since her early ages and it is displayed in videos that the singer herself uploaded on the Internet.[7] She stayed in Spain until she was 13 then moved to Miami, Florida with her mother.[5]

Trevejo first started getting attention on Instagram by posting videos of herself belly dancing to music.[5] Shortly after, she opened a Musical.ly (today known as TikTok) account and gathered a following of thousands then millions of fans on the app. The Latin singer posted belly dancing and lip-syncing videos then became a verified user of the platform with a great amount of followers.[8]

With the growing fame and opportunities that came along, Trevejo signed a recording agreement and co-management agreement with the Universal Music Latin Entertainment sub-label In-Tu Linea at the young age of 14.[9] Finally, on the 22nd of September 2017, the young social-media star released her debut single "Luna Llena" which gained as of today over 113 million views on YouTube.[10]

Career[]

Her debut single "Luna Llena", which was produced by The Fliptones,[11] reached 33 million YouTube views within seven weeks of release.[12] Trevejo was recognized as one of Pandora Radio's 2018 Latin Artists to Watch.[13] Trevejo indicated that her album would be in Spanglish, including both English and Spanish-language songs.[14] In June 2017, she signed a recording contract with In-Tu Linea, a division of the Universal Music Latin Entertainment label.[11] "Luna Llena" debuted on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart at 27 and sold over 2,000 downloads at the time.[15] A re-make of the song called "Luna Llena (English Version)" was released for non-Spanish speakers.

On August 2, 2019, Trevejo released a four-track EP called Una Vez Más. Her single "Luna Llena" reached the Billboard 100 Hot Latin position # 1 for 2 consecutive weeks, thus reaching Gold Record and Platinum Record within a month.[16]

In October 2020, Trevejo signed with new management and relocated to the Los Angeles area. On her 18th birthday she created an OnlyFans account, accumulating over 37,000 subscribers in the first week.[17]

Personal life[]

She had a relationship with the rapper NBA Youngboy in mid-2017.

Shortly before she turned 18 in October 2020, Trevejo migrated from Miami, Florida to Los Angeles. She has expressed problems with life at home with her mother and wished to move houses because of that and to pursue an acting career in L.A.

In December 2020, Trevejo revealed that she underwent breast augmentation surgery. Noticeably, she also underwent buttocks and hip injections.
