Political control[]

Since the foundation of the council in 1973 political control has been held by the following parties:[1]

Party in control Years
Independent 1973 - 1987
No overall control 1987 - 1991
Independent 1991 - 1995
No overall control 1995 - 2007
Conservative 2007 - 2019
No overall control 2019–Present

Following local Conservatives' loss of overall control in May 2019's Election:

The council is led a by a coalition of 9 (all but one) of the independents alongside 9 Liberal Democrat and 5 Green councillors, at whole-council votes on party/group-whipped matters the administration expects thus to carry 24 of the 38 votes. The rest are 13 Conservatives, the first Labour councillor since 1997 and an independent.[2]
