Manipal Hospitals is a private healthcare provider in India that was founded in 1953 with the establishment of Kasturba Medical College.[1] Manipal is among India's largest healthcare providers with its network spread across 27 hospitals.[2] It also maintains an overseas presence through a branch in Malaysia, the Manipal Hospitals Klang.[3]

Early years[]

In 1953, Indian banker and philanthropist T M A Pai established the Kasturba Medical College in Manipal and two years later, the Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore was established with clinical teaching at the District Wenlock Hospital. The colleges are now a part of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, an Institute of Eminence Deemed to be University.

Expansion[]

The first branch of Manipal Hospitals was started in 1991 in Bengaluru. The branch is a 600-bed Quaternary care facility and houses over 60 specialties. In 1997, Manipal Hospitals, Mangalore was established, this 251-bed tertiary care hospital is named KMC Hospital, a teaching hospital of the Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore.[4]

Manipal Hospitals uses IBM Watson for Oncology since 2016. Watson is the first commercially available cognitive computing cloud platform that analyzes high volumes of data understands complex queries and proposes evidence based answers for them.[5] Manipal Hospitals have become the first in the country and the second in the world to implement IBM Watson for diagnosis and treatment of cancer.[6]

In 2021, Manipal Hospitals acquired Columbia Asia for Rs 2,100 crore.[7]

Notable Cases[]

  • In October 2019, Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Centre removed a 9 kg tumor from the abdomen of a patient retaining all the internal organs.[12]
  • A case of suspected fetus-in fetu was diagnosed as tumor and successfully removed from a 7-month-old patient’s body by Manipal Hospitals.[13]
  • A 1.5-year-old infant with an oversized heart was successfully treated by Manipal Hospitals under a unique cardiological surgery.[14]
