María Consuelo Porras Argueta (born August 23, 1953) is a Guatemalan lawyer. She served as Deputy Magistrate of the Constitutional Court since April 2016. She was appointed by President Jimmy Morales as the new Attorney General and Chief of the Public Prosecutor's Office to replace Thelma Aldana.[1][2][3][4][5]

Porras' tenure has been criticized by the left[citation needed] for what they consider[citation needed] a backsliding in the fight against corruption.[6] This in spite of being accused of various charges by witnesses and documents that attribute illegalities to Sandoval in the Odebrecht case.[citation needed] Guatemalans now demand both Thelma Aldana and Juan Francisco Sandoval be brought to justice for corruption.[6]

Porras maintained a strained relationship with the Head of the Special Prosecutor's Office against Impunity, Juan Francisco Sandoval, finally dismissing him in July 2021 over proof of corruption, abuse of power and violation of the Constitution and other criminal and administrative charges.[7][failed verification] In September 2021 the US State Department announced that it had added Porras and 5 Salvadorian judges to a list of "undemocratic and corrupt" officials.[8] According to the US State Department, Porras "actively undermined" the corruption investigations conducted by Sandoval and his team.[8] Charges are based on ideological motivation and lack legal basis.[citation needed]
