History[]

Marcellin College is a Catholic secondary school which was founded by the Marist Brothers to meet the educational needs of boys.

Marcellin is owned and conducted by the Marist Brothers and it derives its inspiration from the traditions and spirit of the Brothers, the teachings of the Church and current educational theory and practice. The name Marcellin comes from the founder of the Marist Brothers, Saint Marcellin Champagnat.

Marcellin Champagnat had very simple and yet rich directions for his schools. His schools were asked to provide opportunities for the young entrusted to their care and to encourage the students to develop their individual talents to the fullest. This is the challenge that Marist schools have endeavoured to meet for the past 200 years.

The College motto is – Virtute Ad Altissima, meaning ‘Strive for the highest with Virtue and Courage’.[2]

Pastoral Care[]

Marcellin College uses a vertical system of Pastoral Care. Each student is welcomed and farewelled under the guidance of a single House and Pastoral leader for his six-year term at Marcellin. This system allows students to develop relationships with those in other year levels. Within the 10 houses there are 6 pastoral groups.[3]

Student Leadership program[]

Marcellin College offers a variety of leadership opportunities for students in the Junior and Senior school, with an SRC representative from each year level for each house from Year 7 to 11. In Year 12 there is a College Captain, Two Vice Captains along with Ten House Captains and Ten House Vice Captains. In Year 9 there is a Junior School Captain, Two Junior School Vice Captains, Faith and Service Captain and Two Faith and Service Vice Captains.[4]

Student Representative Council allows students to be actively involved in College and House matters to help organise events, social justice matters and student wellbeing issues. Junior School Executive consists of 10 Year 9 SRC representatives (one from each house), Junior School Captain, two Junior School Vice Captains and Social Justice Captain. The Junior School Executive meets with the Director of Students and Assistant Principal (Student Wellbeing) on a fortnightly basis, and once a month and/or when required with the Senior SRC Executive and College Captains.[4]

SRC Executive consists of the College Captain, Vice Captains and House Captains. The Senior SRC executive meets with the Director of Students and Assistant Principal (Student Wellbeing) on a fortnightly basis.[4]

Leadership opportunities are also offered in the areas of Liturgy, Chess, Debating, Science, Languages, Visual Arts, Performing Arts (Drama & Music), Publications and Sport.[4]

2008 saw the introduction of various Academic Captains including LOTE and various Performing Arts Captains. This was also the year for the first World Youth Day Captain in conjunction with the World Youth Day event held in the same year with the position being called the Liturgy Captain for future years.
