Matheus Santos Carneiro Cunha (born 27 May 1999), commonly known as Matheus Cunha, is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a forward for La Liga club Atlético Madrid and the Brazil national team.

Early life[]

Matheus Santos Carneiro Cunha was born in 27 May 1999, He was born in the city of João Pessoa, Brazil. His mother, Luziana Cunha was Afro-Brazilian and his dad Carmelo Cunha was White. As a child he would hide from his dad after school to play football, where he would often play against other kids years older than him.

Club career[]

FC Sion[]

Cunha joined FC Sion from Coritiba in 2017. He finished his first season in the Swiss club in style with 10 league goals. He later helped them qualify for the Europa League.

RB Leipzig[]

On 24 June 2018, Cunha joined Bundesliga club RB Leipzig on a five-year-deal. He scored against his later club Hertha BSC to score his maiden goal and mark a 3:0 win. He finished the 2018-19 UEFA Europa League with 6 goals. He also scored a goal that would be voted Bundesliga goal of the month and nominated for the Puskas Award.[2]

Hertha BSC[]

On 31 January 2020, Hertha BSC announced the signing of Matheus Cunha on a four-and-a-half-year deal. He featured in 40 league and cup matches for the latter, having scored ten himself, setting up 13 goals.[3]

Atletico Madrid[]

On 25 August 2021, he joined Atletico Madrid on a 5-year deal. He scored his first goal against Levante UD to seal a 2-2 draw.[4]

International career[]

With Brazil's under-23 team, Cunha was the top scorer of the 2019 Toulon Tournament and the 2020 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament, winning the former and finishing as runner-up in the latter. On 17 June 2021, he was named in the squad for the 2020 Summer Olympics.[5] On 28 July, Cunha scored his 19th goal for Brazil's under-23s in a 3–1 group stage win over Saudi Arabia, overtaking Ronaldinho's record as the side's all-time top scorer.[6]

In September 2020, Cunha was called up to the senior Brazil squad for 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification matches against Bolivia and Peru on 9 and 13 October 2020, respectively.[7][8]

On 7 August 2021 he won the gold medal with Brazil at the Tokyo Olympics.

He made his debut for the senior national team on 2 September 2021 in a World Cup qualifier against Chile, a 1–0 away victory. He substituted Gabriel Barbosa in the 78th minute.[9]

During a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Ecuador he received a violent tackle to the chest.
