History[]

1946 Foundation by Robert Mathys senior [2] for the development and production of machine, equipment and components of special stainless and acid-resistant steels

1958 Maurice E. Müller [3] meets Robert Mathys: The first step into the medical field is taken. Mathys develops and produces implants and instruments for bone surgery and orthopaedics

1963 Development of the first hip stem in collaboration with Prof. Maurice E. Müller and Robert Mathys Senior.

1970 Development of the successful RM Implants for acetabular cups and upper limbs

1985 Establishment of the non-profit organisation Dr. h. c. Robert Mathys Foundation as a research institute and service laboratory

1996 After the sale of Protek to Sulzer in 1988, Mathys developed implants and instruments for Sulzer until 1996. From 1996/1997 Mathys marketed its products itself and under its own name

2002 Acquisation of the German company «Keramed» - Mathys is one of a few manufacturers of orthopedics to develop and produce their own ceramics – since 1972!

2003 Foundation of the new "Mathys Ltd Bettlach" and establishment and expansion of subsidiaries abroad. Sale of the osteosynthesis business to "Synthes-Stratec"(Synthes was sold to Johnson & Johnson in 2011).

2008 Livio Marzo becomes a member of the Board of Directors; the 3rd generation of Mathys thus joins the company

2012 With «Ligamys» – a product for preservation of torn front cruciate ligaments – Mathys began specialising in the area of sports orthopaedics

2014 Roger Mathys is elected to the Board of Directors as second member of the third generation

2017 Hugo Mathys hands over the management of the company to Dr Benjamin Reinmann, who will lead the family business as CEO, on 1 August

2018 Livio Marzo, a member of the Board of Directors since 2008, will be elected Vice-President of the aforementioned body in April, further strengthening the presence of the third generation in the family business

2020 Hugo Mathys hands over his office as President of the Board of Directors to Livio Marzo. With Livio Marzo, a third-generation family member now takes over the leadership of our Board of Directors

Mathys Ltd Bettlach is concentrating exclusively on the development, production and distribution of products for artificial joint replacement. The main production site is Bettlach, Switzerland. Other production is in (Mörsdorf, Thuringia, Germany.
