Matthew Robert Smith (born 22 November 1999) is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Hull City on loan from Manchester City. Although born in England, he represents the Wales national team.[3]

Professional career[]

Manchester City[]

Born in Redditch, Smith was a youth product of West Brom before moving to the youth academy of Manchester City at the age of 14.[4] On 3 July 2018, he moved on loan to FC Twente for the 2018–19 season.[5] On 1 July 2019, Smith joined Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan.[6] After the loan was cut short early, he signed for Charlton Athletic on 31 January 2020 on loan until the end of the 2019–2020 season.[7]

Twente[]

Smith moved to a Dutch club Twente for 2018/19 on a season-long loan.[8] He helped the team to earn promotion to Eredivisie.

Doncaster Rovers[]

Smith moved to League One side Doncaster Rovers on 16 October 2020 on a season long loan.[9] He scored his first goal for Doncaster, and his first professional goal in English football, in a 2–2 draw against AFC Wimbledon on 3 November 2020.[10]

Hull City[]

Smith moved to EFL Championship club Hull City on 6 August 2021 on a season-long loan deal.[11] He made his debut for Hull City on 7 August 2021, after coming on as a substitute in the 4-1 away win at Preston North End.[12]

International career[]

Smith has played for Wales at under-17, under-19, under-21 and senior level, often captaining the side at youth level. He received a call-up to the senior Wales national football team on 20 May 2018.[13]

Smith qualifies for the Welsh team as his grandfather is from South Wales.[14] He made his debut for Wales in a friendly 0–0 tie with Mexico, replacing Tom Lawrence after 81 minutes.[15] In May 2021 he was selected for the Wales squad for the delayed UEFA Euro 2020 tournament.[16]
