Mehra is a surname among Khatris of Punjab and Rajputs of Uttarakhand in India.[1] This surname derives from the word Mihir, meaning sun,[2][need quotation to verify] or master.[3]
According to Aditya Malik, Mehras of Uttarakhand are a powerful community of Rajput landowners in Kumaon Division of Central Himalayas.[4]
Variations[]
Later modifications of this surname are Mehrotra and Malhotra. Malhotra is Punjabi language,[3] version of Mehrotra.[5]
