Mein neuer Freund (English Translation: My New Friend) was a German reality television show, which aired on ProSieben in 2005.

It was the German adaptation of the British comedy My New Best Friend.

The host of the show is Christian Ulmen, who plays the "new best friend" for many candidates on the show.

Concept of TV Show[]

A contestant must spend an entire weekend with someone they do not know, is unpleasant, and just gets on their nerves. The best friend's identity is withheld during this time.

The contestant must bear everything the person wishes to do with them, while sitting across from their new friends and their new friend's parents.

A camera crew follows them around all weekend, and the candidate and his "new friend' are stuck together the entire time.

If the candidate overcomes the friend's provocations, they can win €10,000.

The person who plays the "new friend" makes an excuse to hand over the money, and then leaves the room.

The candidate can cop out at any time.

Christian Ulmen plays each "friend" in disguise.[1]

Reactions[]

  • Knut: The unkempt entertainer is the only one who recognizes his own talent. Contestant Diana (26) endures his odor and performances to the end.
  • Uwe: The mother of an awkward son, Uwe Woellner annoys Anika (26) with an allergy to just about anything. The candidate can't stand her, and cops out for this reason.
  • Alexander: Candidate Franziska (24) can not be disturbed by the rich inhuman snot Alexander von Eich and wins the money.
  • Veith: The therapist and motivational speaker Veith turns Andre into a homosexual, but the candidate survives the episode.
  • Ecke: The schizophrenic American Collin Brown believes in aliens. Back on planet earth, candidate Yvonne (27) wins €10,000.
  • Jurgen: The petty criminal Prolet Juergen Wegmann presents the father of candidate Sandra (28) with a business idea for a telephone sex operation, and handed the father €10,000 after messing with him for a bit.
  • Martina: Candidate Christoph must present the transgender annoyance Martina Kandel to his parents, so that he can win.
  • Marcel: The prick with a bottle cap is always trying to seem cool. Candidate Mike ends the game when Marcel addresses him to his mother. (The episode was not broadcast and only appeared on DVD).

TV Ratings[]

The show's host channel had removed the program from its listing, because the first episode of the series did not match Pro 7's desired market share.

In response to a fan-initiated internet petition, Pro 7 resumed the series at short notice, during their 11:15 P.M. slot.

Although the later episodes saw more views than the pilot, the ratings were still below the station's target.

Re-runs[]

On November 1, 2005, reruns of the entire season of My New Friend were shown on MTV.

Three years later, another repeat ran in early 2008, on Comedy Central.

Conclusively, there was a special episode where Christian Ulmen commented on the individual characters he played, and candidates he messed with while on the show.

Ulmen.tv[]

The roles Alexander Von Eich, Knut Hansen, and Uwe Woellner, and the time on the eleventh of December that he played the corner named Maurice Horstmann, have been incorporated into ulmen.tv.

In ulmen.tv, there are no contestants to spend a weekend with the characters. Unlike Mein Neuer Freund, the videos of ulmen.tv since the end of August 2008 were first shown only on the internet, and could be seen at 3min.de.

Since October 2012 all episodes can be seen on ulmen.tv.

Only later was a broadcast of selected episodes of ulmen.tv also on Comedy Central and MTV.

Ulmen ran 20 episodes on Tele 5 since October 11, 2012.

Internet and DVD[]

All episodes that were broadcast on television, were made available in full length on MySpass.de free of charge.

In addition, a DVD was released, which includes a special never before broadcast episode.
