Mia is a female given name, originating as a hypocoristic of various unrelated names. Mia means 'my', 'mine', or 'bitter'.
It is usually derived from the name Maria and its variants (Miriam, Maryam, Mary), but it is reportedly also used as a hypocoristic of names such as Amalia,[citation needed] Amelia,[citation needed] Emilia,[citation needed] Emily, Salome (Solomia) or Maya.[citation needed]
The name has been popularly associated with the Italian word mia and the Spanish word mía, both meaning 'mine',[citation needed] and also recognized as a derivation from the Slavic word mila, meaning "dear, darling".[citation needed]
