In 2002, he resigned for his seat and appeared as an independent candidate for provincial assembly from the pp 148. He defeated a candidate of MMA ( Mutahida Majlis e Amal) with a margin of more than 18,000 votes. He attained 23,659 votes. This was the constituency from where the former hockey player Chaudhary Akhtar Rasool won provincial assembly seat for five times. This time his uncle contested election where he had support of him. But Mian Muhammad Aslam, outnumbered MMA with a massive defeat. He served as a provincial minister of Tourism from 2003-2007 where he commenced some projects including the famous Cholistan desert jeep rally. This is the constituency Na-122 from where Imran Khan (Chairman Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf) lost to Sardar Ayaz Sadiq (Ex-Speaker National Assembly) twice (2002 and 2013). But Mian Aslam, both times won the seat. This proves the popularity and strength of Mian Aslam Iqbal in his constituency.
