Michael L. Hess is a retired professor of medicine, division of cardiology, Medical College of Virginia, who was key in founding the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) in 1981, and then served as its first president. He has published more than two hundred research papers, directing his attention to the increasing prevalence of heart failure and the development of mechanical assist pumps.[1][2][3]
