Michelle Hinchey (born November 3, 1987) is an American politician from the state of New York. A Democrat, Hinchey has represented the 46th district of the New York State Senate, based in the Hudson Valley and western Capital District, since January 2021.[1][2]

Early life[]

Hinchey, the daughter of former Congressman Maurice Hinchey and Ilene Marder Hinchey [a Communications and Music professional], was born in 1987 in Saugerties, where she continues to live. After graduating from Saugerties High School and Cornell University, Hinchey worked as a communications executive and served on the board of the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development.[3]

Political career[]

In 2020, Hinchey announced she would run for the 46th district of the New York State Senate, which was being vacated by retiring Republican George Amedore.[4] After winning the Democratic primary unopposed, Hinchey narrowly defeated Richard Amedore, her Republican opponent and Amedore's distant cousin, by a margin of 51-49%.[5] Hinchey took office in January 2021 as part of the first Democratic Senate supermajority in decades.[6]

Hinchey is currently the chair of the Agriculture Committee, and she is a member of the Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Committee, the Commerce, Economic Development, and Small Businesses Committee, the Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks, and Recreation Committee, the Energy and Telecommunications Committee, the Environmental Conservation Committee, and the Local Government Committee.[7]
