Mihai Mircea Neșu (nickname: "Bișonul", "The Bichon"; born 19 February 1983) is a Romanian former football player.[2] His career came to an end when he suffered a severe neck injury, which left him paralyzed. He officially ended his career in 2012, as he mainly wanted to focus on his rehabilitation.[1]

Club career[]

Neșu completed a transfer deal with FC Utrecht which saw him move to the club on 27 August 2008. He replaced Erik Pieters who left for PSV in the summer.[3]

On 10 May 2011 Neșu suffered a bad injury during a training session with his team. Nesu collided with his teammate Alje Schut, during training and broke his cervical vertebrae.[4] The doctors were unsure how long it would take to recover.[5] In July 2012 his contract with Utrecht expired and Neșu officially ended his career in professional football.[1]

International career[]

Mihai Neșu played 8 games at international level for Romania, making his debut on 12 November 2005 when coach Victor Pițurcă sent him on the field in order to replace Răzvan Raț in the 80th minute of a friendly which ended with a 2–1 loss against Ivory Coast.[6][7] He also played in a 1–0 away victory against Faroe Islands at the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.[6][8] Mihai Neșu's last game for the national team was a friendly which ended with a 2–0 loss against Israel.[6][9]

Personal life[]

Neșu is the son of Mircea Neşu, a footballer at Universitatea Cluj, referee, and doctor.[10][11] Neșu's nephew, Nikos Barboudis, is also a football player.[12][13]

He married Maria Laura Gherman in June 2006, but got divorced in 2012.[14]
