Mikhail Shivlyakov (born 30 April 1980) is a former Russian Marine currently competing as a professional strongman.

Early life[]

Mikhail Shivlyakov was born on April 30, 1980 in the city of Kiselevsk, Kemerovo Region. In 1998-2000 he served in the Baltic Fleet, in the Black Sea Fleet, in the marines.[1] He rose to the rank of sergeant and deputy platoon commander. He is a representative of the all-Russian public organization "Officers of Russia", awarded with medals of Suvorov and Zhukov.

Strongman career[]

After the army, he began to engage in powerlifting.[2] He won multiple competitions in the Siberian Federal District and became the Kemerovo region record holder in deadlift. In 2007 he made his debut as a participant in the power extreme tournament “Bogatyr of Baikal”. In 2010 he moved to Omsk.

Shivlyakov was invited to participate in the TV show "Army Shop".[3] Moscow directors sought to cast Shivlyakov in the title role of the feature film "Bogatyr".[4] Shivlyakov also starred in the comedy "Zomboyaschik".[5] The creators of the Time of Heroes comic chose Shivlyakov as a prototype for one of the characters.[6]

Mikhail achieved his first big success by winning the 2013 Arnold amateur competition[7] which allowed him to compete in the professional 2014 Arnold Classic, in which he would place 7th.

In 2014, Shivlyakov first qualified for his first World's Strongest Man tournament, and the next year entered the finals of the 2015 tournament to finish 9th.

In 2017, Shivylakov got on the podium with a 3rd place at the Arnold Strongman Australia competition

In 2018, Shivlyakov got on the podium for the first time in the 2018 Arnold Classic, finishing behind Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson and Brian Shaw. During the Elephant Bar Deadlift event, Shivlyakov began bleeding profusely from the nose while attempting a successful 426kg (930 lbs.) deadlift, an image that became a well known viral video. He also won the Arnold Classic South Africa competition.

Shivlyakov is a world record holder for towing an 18-ton tractor at a distance of 6.1 meters (Minsk).[8] He holds records in towing tractors weighing 8.5 tons (Krasnoyarsk) and 20 tons (Novosibirsk).

In addition, Shivlyakov is the record holder of the Russian Book of Records:

  • towing a 24-ton bus at 2.75 meters (Omsk);[9]
  • moving a 2-ton car by 25 meters with the help of teeth (Omsk);[10]
  • towing a truck weighing 14 tons at a distance of 15 m in 22 seconds (Omsk).[11]

On October 18, 2020 at the 2nd season of Feats of Strength, organized by World's Ultimate Strongman, Mikhail set a new world record in the Deadlift in the category of masters (40+ years) - 436 kg.[12]

When he retires, he hopes to open his own Strongman training centre.[13]
