Mississippi Highway 489 (MS 489) is a state highway in eastern Mississippi. Starting on the south end in Lake, the highway travels mostly north into Newton County until it reaches Conehatta.[2] At this point, it turns more northeastward, eventually terminating in Union.[2]

Route description[]

MS 489 begins at an intersection with US 80 in Lake, just near the county line of Scott and Newton counties.[2] It continues north for approximately five miles (8.0 km), intersecting several smaller roads, and passes over a series of creeks, including Tuscolameta Creek and Conehatta Creek.[3] MS 489 then continues for another four miles (6.4 km) and arrives at an intersection near Conehatta.[3] At this point, the route branches off to the right, and the continuation of the original highway becomes Conehatta–Prospect Road.[3] After turning right, the highway travels northeast towards Union. As before, the route intersects with several other roads, and it passes over Pumpkin Creek and Conehatta Creek again.[3] MS 489 reaches Union 13 miles (21 km) after turning.[3] Here, it again turns right, where it becomes known as Gum Street and later Main Street.[3] Less than a mile later, the highway terminates at its intersection with MS 492.[2]

Mississippi Highway 489 is legally designated as a state highway in Mississippi Code § 65-3-3.[4]

History[]

MS 489 can first be observed connecting US 80 and MS 492 on state road maps from 1956, suggesting that it was constructed in the years prior.[5] Much of the highway was still unpaved at this point in time.[5] By 1957, more of the road was paved, leaving only a few unpaved sections.[6] It was not until several years later in 1965 that the road was fully paved.[7]
