Moog Indigo is the ninth studio album by the electronic music pioneer Jean-Jacques Perrey, released on 15 June, 1970 on the Vanguard Records label,[2] the name album is a reference to Jazz song Mood Indigo by Duke Ellington.[3]

Music[]

"Flight of the Bumblebee", a version of the interlude homonymous by Russian composer Rimsky Korsakov, which used real bees sounds.[4][5][6][7] According to Perrey in a 1993 autobiography, he recorded the bees sounds in a hive from Switzerland with a few miles of his Nagra tape recorder. And when he returned to New York City, he used the recordings of live bees, and he spent a total of 46 hours cutting and gluing tiny pieces of magnetic tape (1.03 centimeters long) for the song. As at that time, only 4-track recorders existed, For Perrey to complete this piece, Caroll awarded to him a 4-track Scully machine.[8]

"Gossipo Perpetuo", a version of Moto Perpetuo written by the Italian composer Niccolo Paganini,[9] which used choppy vocal samples and various Moog settings going up and down the scale, as the changing congas and drums hit a samba beat.[10]

"The Elephant Never Forgets", a adaptation on the "Turkish March" composed by Ludwig van Beethoven,[11][12][13][14][15][16] [17][18][19][20][21][22][23] which gained popularity in much of Latin America for being used as the main theme of the Mexican program El Chavo del Ocho.[3]

"18th Century Puppet", a track based on the tune named "Romanze: Andante" from the serenade for strings No. 13 known as Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, composed by the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

"Passport to the Future", a version of the 1967 song "Seuls su Monde" by Mireille Mathieu, with influences of the Joe Meek's hit "Telstar".[24]

Lawsuits[]

On 16 November,[25] 2009 Perrey sued the companies;[26] Televisa S.A de C.V, Univision Communications, Inc., Galavision, Inc., Xenon Pictures, Inc, and Lions Gate Entertainment, Inc,[27][28] however Chespirito was not directly involved in the lawsuit.[29] In 2010, Perrey and the defendants reached a legal settlement,[30] in which the defendants had to pay a sum of money the artists owners of the track "The elephant never forgets".[31]

Use in media[]

The actor and comedian Mexican Roberto Gomez Bolaños, alias, Chespirito, used about four songs from the album as the background theme of some episodes and sketchs of his TV programs, examples of this include:

  • "Gossipo Perpetuo" used in a 1973 episode titled "Los globos y las tijeras" (The balloons and the scissors) of the program El Chavo del 8.
  • "Country Rock Polka" used in a Los Caquitos sketch titled "El robo de las papas fritas" (The theft of French fries), which belongs the 1972 episode "Don Ramon Carpintero" (Don Ramon Carpenter), from the Mexican Sitcom series El Chavo del Ocho.
  • "18Th Century Puppet" was used two times, the first was in a sketch by Doctor Chapatin titled "Enfermos por conveniencia" (Sick for convenience) from the 1973 episode "Los vagos del barrio" from the Mexican series Chapulin Colorado, and the second time was in a 1972 sketch "El mosco es algo tosco" from the program Chespirito.
  • The cover of Jerry Herman's Hello Dolly was used in the final credits of an 1973 sketch titled "Un encuentro en el parque" (A meeting in the park), from the TV series Chespirito.

The song "The Elephant Never Forgets" also was used as Canadian program The Buck Shot Show's main theme.[40] In 2004 a Zelnorm commercial,[41] which showing women lifting their shirts to reveal writing that mentioned their IBS symptoms, was used the song "E.V.A.".[42] more specifically the remix of Fatboy Slim. In the final credits from the episode 11 of the Chilean series 31 minutos's season 1 titled, "La Gotera" (The Leak) imitate the musical credits of El Chavo del Ocho,[43] using as closing theme the theme "The elephant never forgets".[44] "Gossipo Perpetuo" was used for the intro of the Swedish comedy program Anders Och Måns,[45] a series that aired on television between 2003 and 2004.[46]
