Mostaan 110

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mostaan or Musta'an 110 (Persian: مستعان ۱۱۰) is a counterfeit device[1][2][3] that was unveiled at the end of April 2020 by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). It was claimed that the device can be used to detect moments of the coronavirus within a 100 m (330 ft) radius based on electromagnetic radiation.[4][2]

Claims[]

Commander-in-Chief of the IRGC Hossein Salami said that the system, invented by scientists from the Basij paramilitary forces, could be used both for mass screening of people and spotting contaminated areas, noting that it could also minimize the amount of disinfectants being used in areas that are not contaminated, hailing it as an "amazing invention" by "Basiji scientists” and a remarkable achievement for the IRGC.[2]

Reception[]

The Physics Society of Iran called the invention of the remote coronavirus detection device "an unbelievable claim, as far as science fiction is concerned," and called it a quasi-scientific claim. According to the statement, the Human Knowledge Association is currently unable to detect 100-nanometer particles remotely.[5][2]

The news of the unveiling was quickly met with humorous reactions on social media.[3][6] Following the internal and external reactions to the news of the Mostaan 110 invention, Ramezan Sharif spokesman of IRGC said it is a unique system with high capabilities and has been tested in the diagnosis of coronavirus, which has been tested for at least 10 days in at least 10 hospitals and treatment centers for coronary patients in the country more than 10 days before its official unveiling.[7][2]
