The first theatre building was opened in 1843 under the consulate Don Carlos Antonio López and Mariano Roque Alonso.[citation needed] In 1844, the hall was completed for meetings, was inaugurated, and it served as the headquarters for the Congress.[clarification needed][citation needed]

Convinced of the need for cultural facilities, Carlos Antonio López transformed the building into theatre. In 1855, Congress was moved to the new Cabildo.[citation needed]

The same year, the president of the Republic, Don Carlos Antonio López, instructed the Spanish journalist and playwright, Ildefonso Antonio Bermejo, to open a theatre in Asuncion, as well as ordered the building of the First National Congress, which was opened on November 4, 1855.[citation needed]

Subsequently, Bermejo charted plans and built the building, which became the seat of the Theatre once construction was completed.[citation needed]

In 1886, Catalan businessman, Baudillo Alió, was awarded the land on which the old coliseum stood, and was granted permission to raze the square. He then began the construction of the "National Theatre", which was completed in 1889.[citation needed]

The inauguration took place on July 21, 1889, with the introduction of the Company Orchestra, La Estudiantina Española Figaro, which performed works by Verdi, Schubert, Flotow, and others.[citation needed]

In 1894, La Obra de Alió, an extension of the theatre Bermejo, remained in the hands of society, were introduced boxes and beautiful courtyards with gardens, the billboard shows went renewing and the life of the first coliseum of Assumption drew the attention of friends and strangers.[citation needed]

The scenario is reserved for major domestic and foreign companies.
