The Museum of the National Bank of Belgium is a museum belonging to the National Bank of Belgium in Brussels, Belgium.[1] The museum has a collection of old Belgian coins and explains the emergence of currency through the centuries.

History[]

The National Bank has had a museum since 1982.[2] The museum was until 2013 located in the rue du Bois Sauvage and now temporarily in the Boulevard du Berlaimont. In 2018, the new museum of the National Bank will open its doors at a new location.

The museum is due to reopen in January 2018, located in a 19th-century renovated bank building.[3]

Collection[]

This museum invites visitors to follow the money route in an interactive presentation.[4] The story of money exhibition explores the world of money in several major themes. It examines the various missions and activities of the National Bank since its foundation, and also how methods of payment have developed. For example, the word 'salary' comes from the Latin 'salarium', which referred to the Roman soldiers' pay in salt. The inner workings of financial markets and payment systems are also analysed. Using original presentations, the exhibition provides a wide range of explanations on the sometimes complex aspects of money.
