Musixmatch is an Italian music data company and platform for users to search and share song lyrics with translations. It is the largest platform of this kind in the world[2] having 80 million users (50 million active users),[3] 8 million lyrics and 100+ employees.[1][4]
Overview[]
Musixmatch's mobile app displays lyrics synchronised with the music being played.[5] Its native apps can scan all the songs in a user's music library, find lyrics, and be used as a music player. On Android, it also supports music streaming services like Spotify, Google Play Music, Deezer, Rhapsody, and YouTube.[6] The company also has global agreements with Apple Music, Amazon Music, Instagram, Facebook, Google Search and Spotify.[7]
Features[]
Musixmatch has a public database where lyrics are displayed. Users can sign up and contribute lyrics, translations, and synchronization of lyrics to the audio of a song, for points that correspond to a user level. The points have no redeemable value, but are a marker of the users' contributions and impact made within the site.
Notable users are given the role of a Lyrics Curator, where they take on the role of an editor. They are able to do specific tasks that Musixmatch requires assistance with, and are able to receive a reward for contributing. Exceptional curators are eligible to become a Specialist, where they receive higher rewards and have permissions similar to an administrator. Curators and Specialists are given extra rewards for quality-assurance work on users. In order to keep quality high, Musixmatch's employees or Specialists might lock lyrics to prevent edits when necessary, similar to Wikipedia.
History[]
Musixmatch was founded in Bologna in 2010 by Massimo Ciociola.[8]
Musixmatch went live in July 2010, and as of January 2015 had raised $14.1 million in angel and venture capital funding.[2] Musixmatch has signed agreements with publishers such as EMI Publishing, Warner/Chappell Music,[9] Universal Music Publishing, Sony ATV, Kobalt, Peer Music and Disney Music.[10]
The company provided Spotify's lyrics user interface on Spotify Desktop[11] until this service was discontinued in May 2016.[12] In November 2019, Musixmatch and Spotify reinstated their partnership, allowing Spotify's users to see lyrics (time-synced, or not) in certain regions.[13] As of November 2021, this feature is available worldwide.[14]
In June 2019, Musixmatch launched a partnership with Instagram, allowing all users to add Lyrics Stickers to any Instagram Music Story.[15]
