My Little Pony: A New Generation is an upcoming computer-animated fantasy comedy film directed by Robert Cullen and José Ucha, with Cecil Kramer and Peter Lewis as producers. Based on the My Little Pony toyline by Hasbro, the film will be the start of the fifth incarnation of the franchise, while also serving as a direct follow-up to the fourth incarnation. Entertainment One will produce the film, and will be animated by Boulder Media.

Originally set to be released theatrically by Paramount Pictures, the film is scheduled for a September 24, 2021, release on Netflix, with a theatrical release in Russia a day earlier.

Synopsis[]

Many years after the events of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Twilight Sparkle's teachings on friendship and harmony have been replaced with paranoia and mistrust, and the three pony kinds – Earth ponies, pegasi and unicorns – live separated from one another.[3] In the Earth pony town of Maretime Bay, Argyle Starshine tells stories of Twilight Sparkle and her friends to his young daughter Sunny Starscout, who inherits his dream of reuniting the three pony kinds.[4]

One day, after Sunny has grown up, a lost unicorn named Izzy Moonbow wanders into Maretime Bay. The town's residents react in panic,[3] believing that Izzy is a hostile invader. Sunny, finally given an opportunity to make friends with a unicorn, shelters Izzy in her home, and Izzy reveals to her that unicorns no longer have magic powers following their sudden disappearance. Together, they embark on an adventure and travel across Equestria on a mission to restore magic to the land.[4]

Voice cast[]

  • Vanessa Hudgens as Sunny Starscout,[5] an adventurous Earth pony who likes roller skating and wants all three pony kinds to get along[6]
  • Kimiko Glenn as Izzy Moonbow,[5] an energetic and curious unicorn from Bridlewood who loves crafting[6]
  • James Marsden as Hitch Trailblazer,[5] an Earth pony who is a kind and hard-working sheriff at Maretime Bay[6]
  • Sofia Carson as Pipp Petals,[5] a Pegasus princess from Zephyr Heights who is a talented pop icon and loves to entertain other ponies with her music[6]
  • Liza Koshy as Zipp Storm,[5] Pipp's sister, a rebellious Pegasus princess from Zephyr Heights who likes athletics and science[6]
  • Elizabeth Perkins as Phyllis[7]
  • Jane Krakowski as Queen Haven,[7] a pegasus, the ruler of Zephyr Heights and the mother of Pipp and Zipp[4]
  • Ken Jeong as Sprout,[7] an Earth pony and sheriff at Maretime Bay, second in command to Hitch[4]
  • Phil LaMarr as Alphabittle[7]
  • Michael McKean as Argyle,[7] Sunny's father who tells her stories about Twilight Sparkle and her friends[4]

Development[]

In February 2019, it was reported that Hasbro was developing a computer-animated My Little Pony feature film.[8][better source needed] Reports later said that the film would mark the beginning of the franchise's fifth-generation,[9][better source needed] which was confirmed on September 17, 2020;[10][better source needed] My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic creator Lauren Faust first hinted that Hasbro was working on the fifth incarnation in 2018, when she denied any involvement on the franchise's next incarnation,[11] while Tara Strong, voice actress for Twilight Sparkle, said that she wouldn't reprise her role in the fifth incarnation in April 2020 (due to reprising her role in My Little Pony: Pony Life).[12] On October 8, 2020, it was reported that the fifth incarnation, including the film, will center on a new set of characters, though with the possibility of characters from the previous incarnation appearing.[10]

On January 29, 2021, Emily Thompson, Entertainment One's VP of global brand management, revealed that the film will be set in the same world as the fourth incarnation of the franchise, while still serving as the first entry in the fifth incarnation, being set years after the events depicted in the previous incarnation.[13] Thompson explained that her decision was made because the producers felt it would have "felt wrong" to not to further explore the lore and worldbuilding established by the fourth incarnation.[13]

On February 12, 2021, it was reported that the founder of Boulder Media, Robert Cullen, along with José Ucha will serve as directors, with Mark Fattibene set to co-direct the film.[14] Cecil Kramer and Peter Lewis were also announced as producers for the film.[14]

Animation[]

The film's animation services will be provided by Hasbro-owned Irish animation studio Boulder Media.[3] Unlike previous My Little Pony media, the film will be animated entirely through computer-animation.[3]

Release[]

My Little Pony: A New Generation is set to be released on September 24, 2021, by Netflix.[14][15] The film was originally slated to be released theatrically on the same day by Paramount Pictures.[16] However, eOne sold the distribution rights to Netflix by February 2021 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, while retaining them in China.[14] In Russia, the film will be distributed by Central Partnership and will be released theatrically on September 23, 2021.[17]

Followups[]

Following the cancellation of the film's theatrical release, Hasbro and Netflix later announced that a computer-animated streaming television series as well as a 44-minute special would also release on the streaming service, following the film.[18][19][20] The series will center on the adventures of Sunny Starscout and her friends after the events depicted in the film.[19] Made-for-YouTube original content will also release in 2022 and 2023.[18]
