NCHPAD

The National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (abbreviated NCHPAD, formerly the National Center on Physical Activity and Disability or NCPAD) is an information center and public health practice concerned with physical activity and disability. The mission of the National Center on Physical Activity and Disability is to promote substantial health benefits that can be gained from participating in regular physical activity.

It was founded in 1999 as part of the Department of Disability and Human Development in the at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It is supported by grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Physical Activity can not only be a fun opportunity for a child with special needs or disability, but can also help them to grow by promoting development of social, emotional, and physical abilities. Social development can be encouraged through interactions with others and the opportunity to observe and ask questions. Advances in emotional development can be done through teaching the child how to cope with winning and losing scenarios. Physical development nurtures proper muscle maintenance and aids in weight management that will benefit the child later in life. All of these skills are crucial for a special needs or disabled child, as it actively encourages important aptitude that will help them progress in adulthood.

In 2012 the Center moved to the campus of the Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, Alabama and Rimmer was made the inaugural "Lakeshore Foundation Endowed Chair in Health Promotion and Rehabilitation Sciences" at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's School of Health Professions.^[1] In 2021 the CDC increased its support for the program to $25 million over five years.^[2]
