Naaz Joshi (born December 31, 1984 in New Delhi India[1]) is India's first transgender international beauty queen, a trans rights activist[2] and a motivational speaker.

Joshi won beauty pageant three times in a row.[3] She is India's first transgender cover model.[4] She is the world's first trans woman to win international beauty pageant with cisgender women.[5] Naaz is India's first transgender show stopper.[6] She is India's first Transgender model. [7]

Early life[]

She was born as Aizya Joshi to a Muslim mother and Hindu Punjabi father.[8] At an early age of 7, her family sent her to a distant relative in Mumbai to avoid taunts from society for her feminine behavior. She worked at dance bars and restaurants to earn her living. Later, she enrolled National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and completed her formal studies in fashion design.[9]

At the age of 18, Naaz met her cousin, Viveka Babajee, a famous Mauritian model. It was through Viveka’s help and support that Naaz got into NIFT and studied Fashion Design. After Viveka committed suicide in the year 2010, Naaz decided to take forward her unfulfilled dream of becoming a model and bid adieu to the world of design.[10]

She later completed her MBA in marketing from the Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad.[11]

Personal life[]

Joshi worked as a sex worker to earn money for her sex reassignment surgery.[12] In 2018, she claimed to be a victim of gender discrimination after having her booking rejected by a hotel in Gurgaon. Although a junior employee of the hotel initially contacted about the matter by the Hindustan Times stated that the booking was cancelled for "gender-based reasons", this was later denied by the general manager who stated the "allegations of discrimination of any kind were false" and that the hotel had not yet confirmed Joshi's booking because it was still waiting for approval from the regional sales office.[13]

Naaz is a proud mother of two daughters, she adopted them when their immediate families abandoned them, talking to New Indian Express she told that her younger daughter was the daughter of 16 year old girl and the mother threw her child in dustbin.[14]

The status of India’s transgender population improved when the NALSA was able to get transgender recognized as a third gender by the Supreme Court of India on 14 April 2014.[15] She has also won the 2017 and pageants. On winning this particular title, she told Indulge Express that winning the crown gives her more power and responsibility towards society, with which she aims to work towards bringing the transgender community into the mainstream.[16]

IIM students interacted with Miss World Diversity 2019 to promote mutual respect and inclusion of the third gender.[17]

During an interview on 72nd independence day celebration of India, she stated that love is not free in the country, she was living in with a boy and her marriage called off because she is a trans woman. Trans women in India are often subjected to hatred and transphobia.[18]

Professional life[]

Naaz has post graduated from NIFT. She studied knitwear design and technology there. Before entering NIFT She had studied fashion design from pearl academy of fashion. After her post graduation she worked with two eminent designers of India Ritu Kumar and . She has worked with ex Member of parliament Dr.Udit Raj for gender sensitisation and making women aware of their constitutional rights and menstrual hygiene.[19]

Naaz joshi is a pageant director for cis gender women named MIHM , Mrs India Home Makers, where she is trying to bridge the gap between genders.[20] Naaz Joshi has been working on gender Sensitization Programs after she has been crowned as India's first transgender international beauty queen. She has interacted with many schools and universities to empower the trans community in India. This includes tagore international school, new delhi ARSD college delhi, Sri Venkateswara College, delhi, Roshani nilaya school of social science, Mangalore and IIM UDAIPUR. She has fulfilled her promise of working for the community after winning the titles. Today she is brand ambassador of Tritan Solutions Pvt Ltd,[21] Sri lanka based ngo Tbc to be Changed and good will ambassador of AGS grooming academy delhi. Naaz joshi has been working closely with doctor nitin shakya, Nodal officer New Delhi District to empower trans community. She is working under his project jeet to mainstream transgender community of India.[22]

Pageantry[]

Joshi first won Miss World Diversity in 2017, and retained her title the following year. She then became the first trans woman to win the title for the third consecutive year in 2019. The win also made her the first transgender person in the world to win an international crown against cis-gendered women.[23][24]

Naaz joshi won Miss Transqueen India classic 2018 in Mumbai in September 2018.[25]

Joshi was invited to tedx at GLA university in Mathura on December 8, 2019, to inspire people born with disabilities. The theme of the talk was silent heroes hidden truth.[26]

Naaz Joshi won Miss Universe Diversity 2020; due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisation took it digital this year. There were contestants from thirty countries who were given online tasks. Naaz chose to work on women's safety and self defence.[27]

In 2021 Naaz Joshi won Empress Earth pageant, this crown made her India's first international trans queen with 7 international crowns. Naaz is the first Indian to win the prestigious title of Empress Earth. The contest was supposed to take place in Dubai on June 1, 2021, but due to the pandemic, the pageant was done virtually. Female Contestants from more than 15 countries participated in Empress Earth 2021. The countries who entered the top five were Colombia, Spain, Brazil, Mexico and India.[28]

In an interview with the times of india Naaz narrated about her hurdles in pageantry. Some contestants backed out, hearing a trans woman shall be competing in a straight pageant and some backed out because she had a past history of sex work. She went on narrating that the national Indian trans pageant where she competed in 2018, she was age shamed by all her co contestants because she was eldest of all the transgender contestants. This bad incidence left a deep scar on her heart.[29]
