Nandaime is a town and a municipality in the Granada department of Nicaragua.

Nandaime is a small town in the southwestern part of the country. It is located on the Panamerican highway which crosses the Pacific area of Nicaragua, at a distance of 67 km from Managua, capital of the Republic, and 20 kilometers from Granada, the departmental capital. The patron saints are St. Anne and San Joaquin. It was elevated to city on October 29, 1890.

City Limits: North with the municipalities of Granada, and Diriomo. South, with the towns of Bethlehem, Potosi and Buenos Aires (Department of Rivas). East with Cocibolca Lake or Lake Nicaragua West with the municipalities of Santa Teresa and La Paz de Carazo (Department of Carazo).

Population Total: 41,457 inhabitants. Urban Population: 21,361. Rural Population: 20,096. 49.9% of its inhabitants are women. 46.5% of the population is under 15 years of age. Approximately 67% of males are under 25 years of age. 48.9% of its population lives in rural areas. Population density of approximately: 112 inhabitants. /km2 Its inhabitants are grouped into 84 communities. In urban areas about 14 communities and 21,361 residents, in about 70 rural counties the remaining 20,186 people reside.

Etymology[]

The name Nandaime is derived from the Chorotega word "nanda" (meaning "arroyo", or stream) and the suffix "-ime" (indicating abundance). Nandaime means "place of abundant streams".^[2]

Tradition and Culture Nandaimeña[]

Local Holidays: July 26, in honor of St. Anne, patron saint of the municipality. Dances: There are many traditional folk dance rooted in the town, other dances that are practiced during religious festivities in the community are the dance of the bird, the siren and the owl. The running of the bulls a little different from in Pamplona in Spain. The Baile of the Devils is the Typical of Nandaime.

Religion[]

The town's population is predominantly Catholic and traditional. The celebrations of Santa Ana, Easter, Christmas and the Immaculate Conception, 7 and 25 December respectively, are the major annual religious activities of the municipality. The same over periods ranging from one to two weeks to each festival.

The Catholic faithful have a parish church, the church of Santa Ana Catholic church has been declared National Historic Monument. The Catholic population also has another small temple, the church of El Calvario.

Other faiths are present: Pentecostal (Apostolic, Assemblies of God, Church of God), Baptist, Mormon, and Jehovah's Witnesses.

Sports[]

In Nandaime, as in most parts of Nicaragua, the most important sport, "the beautiful game" is baseball. It is the most popular sport and most supported.
