Nathan Ryan Dahm (born January 27, 1983) is an American politician from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, who is a Republican member of the Oklahoma Senate. Dahm was first elected to serve District 33 in 2012. He is term-limited in 2024.

Early life[]

Raised in a missionary family to Romania just after the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, Dahm graduated from A Beka Christian Academy Home School in 2001. Immediately after graduation, Dahm moved back to Romania and eventually became Dean of the Biblical school affiliated with the mission.[1]

Career[]

2012 election[]

Dahm came in narrowly under the top candidate in the Republican primary election's first round. He won the runoff election and did not face a Democratic opponent in the general election.[2]

Oklahoma Senate (2013-present)[]

Nathan Dahm has been rated the most conservative Senator in the Oklahoma State Senate in the Legislature of Oklahoma.[3] Dahm served in the 54th Oklahoma Legislature, 55th Oklahoma Legislature, 56th Oklahoma Legislature, 57th Oklahoma Legislature, and 58th Oklahoma Legislature.

54th Legislature[]

Dahm introduced numerous gun bills for the 2013 legislative session, including a bill penalizing the enforcement of federal government gun restrictions in Oklahoma[4] In 2014, Dahm introduced the "Piers Morgan Constitutional Right to Keep and Bear Arms Without Infringement Act" which would allow firearms to be openly carried without a permit.[5] Talk show host Morgan invited him onto Piers Morgan Live to debate the legislation.[6]

Dahm also sponsored legislation in the Senate to penalize the enforcement of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in Oklahoma.[7]

55th Legislature[]

Dahm sponsored legislation in the Oklahoma Senate that would subject physicians performing abortions to felony charges and revocation of their medical licenses. It passed the Senate, 33-12, on May 19, 2016.[8][9] The bill was quickly vetoed by Republican Governor Mary Fallin.

57th Legislature[]

Dahm is an opponent of Sanctuary city, due to this he has sponsored legislation to Ban Sanctuary city in Oklahoma twice. one time in 2020 and an other in 2021.[10][11]

58th Legislature[]

Accusations of misogynist comments[]

On April 23, 2021, Dahm introduced SB 1065, a bill banning paper and pasta straws "in honor of Earth Day."[12] In his press release, in addition to invoking the names of President Joe Biden and U.S. Senator Mitt Romney, Dahm made comments about Vice President Kamala Harris that were accused of being sexist and derogatory.[12] He stated, "Hatred of paper straws is nearly universal. I’ve never met a single person who enjoys using a paper straw. They fall apart and turn to mush quicker than Joe Biden trying to string together a coherent sentence. They collapse like Mitt Romney under the slightest amount of pressure, and even with Kamala Harris ... well, never mind."[13] When pressed by NewsChannel 8's Tyler Butler in an interview about the comment, Dahm stated, "There's a lot of different things that could be said about that, with her vast experience and how she got her start into politics. In talking with some people one thing that could be said is that you know you can't use a paper straw for a milkshake, but maybe Kamala Harris could because of her vast experience. Maybe she would be able to get that accomplished..."[13]

In response to Dahm's comments about Vice President Harris, Oklahoma Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Treat stated, "I am disappointed in Nathan Dahm's comments about the vice president of the United States. His comments were misogynistic, disrespectful, immature, and undermine the good work of the staff and other members of the Oklahoma Senate. As the leader of the Senate, I hold senators to a high standard of conduct and decorum, and Senator Dahm completely failed to live up to that standard."[14]

2018 run for Oklahoma's 1st congressional district[]

On May 5, 2017, Dahm announced his candidacy for Representative of Oklahoma's 1st congressional district.[15] On June 28, 2018, he lost the Republican Primary for the seat by garnering only 20.2% of the vote.[16]
