Needle in a Timestack is a 2021 American science fiction film written and directed by John Ridley, based on the short story of the same name by Robert Silverberg. It stars Leslie Odom Jr., Freida Pinto, Cynthia Erivo, Orlando Bloom, and Jadyn Wong, and was released on October 15, 2021, by Lionsgate.

Premise[]

A marriage is challenged when a time traveler gets involved in their lives.

Plot[]

The movie is about Nick Mikkelsen and the trajectory of romantic love in his life as an adult. The movie covers three romantic love in linear trajectories, beginning with 'Nick and Janine'. In the Nick and Janine romantic love trajectory, Nick falls in love with and marries Janine, after Janine was married to and divorced from their mutual good friend Tommy. In the Nick and Alex love trajectory, the second linear trajectory, Tommy time jaunts from the present where Nick and Janine are married to the fix the past mistake of allowing his marriage to Janine to fall apart. The time jaunt is successful, although it was a time crime, and now in the revised present, Tommy is married to Janine, and Nick is married to Alex. Nick figures out that his timeline has been tampered with and decides to time jaunt in an effort to make things right. When he comes back to the present, we go into his third romantic love linear trajectory, Nick. He struggles with loneliness and is neither married to Janine nor Alex after going back to the past and persuading Alex that Tommy is the right person for her. In the last minutes of the film, Nick sees Janine at a restaurant. Their eyes meet, and something inside of her and something inside of him knows. They know there is something. The movie ends with that knowing being felt and known, but their love not yet realized in what appears to be the next chapter in the Nick and Janine romantic love linear trajectory.

It was announced in April 2017 that John Ridley would write and direct a film based on Robert Silverberg's short story "Needle in a Timestack", with Miramax set to distribute.[1] Miramax was no longer involved by June 2018, with Bron Studios taking over. Leslie Odom Jr., Freida Pinto, Cynthia Erivo, Orlando Bloom and Jadyn Wong were cast that same month.[2][3]

Filming took place in Vancouver from June 18 to July 24, 2018.[4] According to Silverberg, the film underwent more than a year of editing and re-editing.[5]

Release[]

The film was released in the United States on digital, video on demand, and in limited theaters by Lionsgate on October 15, 2021, and on Blu-ray Disc and DVD on October 19.[6]
