Neil S. Hirsch (June 7, 1947 – June 24, 2021) was an American businessman and entrepreneur. In 1969, he founded Telerate, a global communications network. In addition, he was the owner of and the patron of the BlackWatch Polo Team.

Early life[]

Neil Samuel Hirsch was born on June 7, 1947 in St. Louis, Missouri. His father, Harold Hirsch, was a New York-based executive for a midwest chain of department stores called . Months after Neil was born, his family moved to Rockville Centre, New York.

Career[]

At the age of 21, after spending a couple of years at University of Bridgeport, Hirsch dropped out of college and founded Telerate, a global communications network, where he served as President and Chief Executive.[1][2][3] Over the ensuing 20 years, Telerate revolutionized the trading of government, fixed income and foreign exchange securities by creating technology to collect and disseminate information that, at the time, was not otherwise available to traders. By 1990, he had expanded the business into over 80 countries when he orchestrate its sale to Dow Jones & Company for more than $1.5 billion.[1]

He later founded , a securities-tracking firm, and he served as its Chairman.[4]

In 1999, Hirsch purchased the Player's Club Restaurant, located in Wellington, Florida. It was here that he was able to express his love of singing and piano music.

In his later years, Hirsch kept his foot in the corporate world with his longtime business partner, Stephen Rappaport, and their firm RZ Capital. Together, they purchased Backstage magazine and in December of 2013. RZ Capital sold their share of the company in 2018.

Polo[]

In 1995, Hirsch co-founded the Bridgehampton Polo Club with his childhood friend Peter M. Brant.[citation needed][5][6] He served as its President for many years.[7] In 2011, he sold his share to Peter Brant.[3]

Hirsch also owned the BlackWatch Polo Team, which was sponsored by Ralph Lauren.[1][3][8]

Personal life[]

Hirsch was married briefly to Cynthia Duncan, step-granddaughter of the notable organized crime figure Meyer Lansky. In 1973, he married Caroline Hirsch, owner of Carolines on Broadway, a New York comedy club the two purchased together in 1981. They were divorced in 1986. Shortly before he passed, Hirsch was married to Laura DeLuca.
