Nicholas Vines

Nicholas Vines (born Sydney, 1976), is an Australian composer currently based in Sydney. He studied at the University of Sydney with Anne Boyd, Peter Sculthorpe and Ross Edwards. He completed a PhD at Harvard University studying with Harrison Birtwistle, Bernard Rands, Magnus Lindberg, Julian Anderson, Lee Hyla, Mario Davidovsky, Judith Weir and Michael Finnissy.

His chamber vocal pieces include Torrid Nature Scenes, The Butcher of Brisbane, and The Economy of Wax. His other operatic works include Loose, Wet, Perforated. Other miscellaneous works include On The Death of a Pikachu, a work representing modern societies' values of virtual constructs.

He has received commissions from established organizations around the world, such as Callithumpian Consort, Firebird Ensemble, mmm… Guerilla Opera, ChamberMade Opera, the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Recognition for Vines’ work includes APRA/AMC Art Music, Helpmann and Green Room Awards (2011/2012, 2007, 2006), runner-up in the 2010 Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute, an honorable mention in the 2006 Salvatore Martirano Competition (USA), and 2nd Prize in the 'Musica Sacra 2005' Competition (Poland). Published by Wirripang, Faber Music, the Australian Composers Online Project and Alexander Street Press’ Classical Scores Library, the majority of his work is available through the Australian Music Centre. A CD of Vines’ compositions featuring the Callithumpian Consort, Torrid Nature Scenes, was released on Navona Records in May 2013.

He currently teaches at Sydney Grammar School, and is the Artistic Director of Music and now Senior Master of Music Extension.
