Nira is a town in Maharashtra 80 km from Pune.[1] It is named after the Nira River.
Geography[]
Nira is situated on the banks of Nira river. Nira is the border city of Pune district and Satara district. One more interesting thing is that Nira city is border of Purandar tehsil and border to Baramati, Khandala, Phaltan tehsil. The area around Nira comes under the rainshadow area. Nira is key town on Palkhi Marg.
Economy[]
There is a dam on Nira river at Veer. The capacity of the Veer dam is 11TMC. Water is used for drinking , for industries and agricultural purposes. There are two canals one is Right and other is Left. Due to ample water, the land around Nira is mostly agricultural land. Nira is famous for jaggery and onion and was once a leading producer of them. Fig, custard apple, pomegranate, guava, sweet lime, and grapes are available there. Sugar cane, wheat, bajara, maize, and jawar are major farm crops. Nira is famous for jaggary all over India.
Though this area is surrounded by agricultural land there are many industries. Someshwar Sugar factory, Jubilant Life Sciences Limited, M/s Kamal Cement Pipe & Products, Tirupati Balaji Agro Products, Angha Ice Factory, and many small scale industries are running here.
Nira is one of the Key Market Places for farmers nearby. Nira has Grampanchayat with 17 elected members from people who look after the financial, cultural affairs of town. It has a Grampanchayat building where all the elected members work for betterment of town.
Transport[]
Nira is linked by railway to Miraj and Kolhapur. Long-route trains do not stop there. Roads around Nira are city roads of good quality.
By road, it is well connected to Pune via Jejuri, the famous temple town, and saswad. On the other side, it is also connected to a famous pilgrimage place, Pandharpur via Phaltan. Third major town it connects is Baramati, the emerging industrial town.
To all these places, regular road transport (S. T.) buses are available. Takes around 2–2.5 hours from Pune, 1.5 hours from baramati. Some 2.5 hours from Pandharpur.
Transport facility is also available by famous Aarti Transport all over India.
Temples[]
A very famous Temple of Datta on the bank of river Nira once visited by then Shree Sreedhar Swamy. Nira has many more temples, including one Saibaba temple is thebiggest temple, located in ward no 4. Jyotirling Temple at Gulunche is very famous for Katebaras Yatra 5 km from to Nira. Kate Baras Yatra is celebrated for 12 days, started from Dipawali Padwa. Before starting of yatra, on its first day, people do 'Ghatsthapana' (a special pooja to start yatra). During Kate Baras Yatra, people keeps fast for 12 days, daily Kirtan and Chhabina (Dhole and lazim is played during yatra) is arranged by villagers. on its 11th day i.e. on Kartik Shuddha Ekadashi, Palkhi moves for Nira Snan. On last day, Bhaktgan jumps in spines of babool tree.
Also there is a Panchayatan temple (temple of five lords) which is spacious and surrounded by beautiful garden. It is owned by the chemical factory Jubilant Life Sciences and is located on Nira–Baramati road. There is also a Temple of Mahadev which is established by Lt. Damodarsheth Shankarsheth Garule in the memories of his beloved wife Sonubai in 1951 and it is located on the bank of Nira River. It is also a very holy place to visit, which is located in Shivtakrar around 2 km from the railway station.
