North River in Nova Scotia

North River is a community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in Colchester County.

North River is a community near Truro, Colchester County, Nova Scotia. It was settled in the 1760s as part of what was then Onslow Township (1), one of the many Townships set up by the British Government in Halifax to encourage Planters to come to Nova Scotia to work the land. Onslow Township was settled by New England Planters (2) from the area around Boston, Massachusetts for example Palmer, Melrose, and Malden. Two of the families that arrived in the 1760s from that area were the Lynds (Lynde) family of Melrose and the McNutt (McNitt) family of Palmer. There are still many residents of the area with those surnames. The original occupation of the new immigrants was farming.

Settlers also came to North River from New Hampshire and included the surname Whidden.
