Northern AFC is an association football club in North East Valley, Dunedin, New Zealand. They are currently competing in the ODT FootballSouth Premier League.

The club is based at The Gardens Ground, North East Valley, Dunedin.

Club history[]

Established in 1888, the club claims to be the oldest in continual existence in New Zealand.[1] They have twice won the Chatham Cup, in 1959 and 1961, and have been finalists on eight other occasions.[2]

After amalgamating with Maori Hill (founded 1904) in 1972, the club was briefly known as Dunedin North End (1972–1974) and then as North End United, a name it used until 1990.[1] The club celebrated its 125th Jubilee in 2013; as part of the celebrations, the NAFC Premier Men played Green Island in the first club football match to be held at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium.[citation needed]

Northern's club strip is a vertical black and white striped shirt, black shorts and socks.

The club's top men's side compete in the Otago Daily Times Southern Premier League, where they see limited success. In 2018 season they finished second bottom of the league with only one win to show from eight fixtures.[3] Northern would then go 1001 days without another win before they managed to beat University 2–1 in the 2021 season, for their first win in nearly three years.[4]
