View from the top of the Fort San Juan de Pinos of the approach to what have been the City of the Mosquitos (now downtown New Smyrna Beach) from Mosquito Inlet (now Ponce de Leon Inlet). Buttresses at the corners and sides of structure belie the assumption that it was originally built for anything but an above ground purpose.
