Oliver Peoples is an American luxury eyewear brand established in 1986, and owned by Luxottica.[1] The brand is sold in Oliver Peoples boutiques, online, and at fashion boutiques and department stores throughout the world. Oliver Peoples eyewear is designed in Los Angeles and made in Italy and Japan.[2]

History[]

Oliver Peoples was founded by Larry Leight and his brother Dennis Leight in 1986.[3] Before they launched the company, Larry Leight worked as an optician and would draw glasses on the celebrities in Vogue.[4] In 1984, he designed a pair, later named "Identity."[5] that were manufactured for pop artist Andy Warhol.[6] Warhol wore the glasses for an editorial that was published in the German magazine Männer Vogue in 1987.[7]

In 1986, the Leight brothers were searching for eyewear brands to stock his new boutique in West Hollywood, California.[8] They purchased a bulk of new American brand frames in their original packaging for $5,000 at an auction in Connecticut.[9] While going through the inventory, a receipt was found belonging to the original owner named Oliver Peoples and they decided to name the company after him.[3]

The design house is the official licensee of Paul Smith Spectacles.[10] The brand has been featured in numerous fashion magazines, including GQ, Vogue, Elle, L'Uomo Vogue, Esquire and Vanity Fair.[11] Characterized by subtle detailing, retro aesthetics and high-quality materials, their frames are popular with celebrities, including Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, and Larry David.[12]

In 2006, Oakley acquired Oliver Peoples for $46.7 million.[13] In 2007 Oakley and its assets were purchased by eyewear industry giant Luxottica.[14]

In 2009, Oliver Peoples collaborated with actress Zooey Deschanel for a signature pair of sunglasses called "Zooey."[15]
